What to do in Lemoore California…(purchase a Rocket)

I recently traveled to Lemoore California. This guy by the name of David Howe (@HFS) makes all kinds of useful gadgets to build and maintain our fine series of Aircraft. Since Fresno was the closest major airport, I bummed a ride with David from Fresno to Lemoore. As Dave showed me around his shop, we accumulated a pile of Dave‘s inventions for me to take home in my carry-on.

The visit progressed to his hangar and a thorough tour of his beautiful Harmon Rocket II. The real purpose of my 30 hour visit ended up being an interview by David of me to determine if I was worthy to be the new owner of his award winning Rocket. I passed the test and took delivery of the Rocket this past Tuesday. I flew it back to Colorado on Wednesday without incident.

I am now the proud owner of what must be one of the nicest examples of a Harmon Rocket II that’s ever existed. It will live alongside what I believe to be one of the nicest RV-3s ever in existence. The really cool part of the story is that the two aircraft were built by very good friends. David and Chuck have known each other for more than 40 years (probably 50 years now that I think of it). The two Aircraft are essentially siblings.

As I explained to both builders, I consider myself to be a caretaker for these Aircraft as long as they’re in my possession. My first and overriding goal will be to do no harm. As was the case in purchasing my RV-3 from Chuck, I feel like the best thing to come out of this transaction is a new friendship. David Howe is absolutely a national treasure in the world of amateur built aircraft. He thinks of things and sees things that mere mortals such a such as myself have never seen nor considered. What’s more, is that he’s able to come up with simple and effective solutions.

Dave’s Rocket will live with Chuck’s 3 here at my house near Brighton, Colorado. If I ever stop tinkering with airplanes long enough to finish my house remodel, I’ll have space to host guests wishing to visit these beautiful Aircraft. Until then, look for a bright red RV-3 or a beautiful red white and blue Rocket at a pancake breakfast or fly-in near you.

Family photos of the two beautiful aircraft together are already in the planning stages. Standby.

That is a great story Rod. I remember Chuck's 3 in his hangar and him flying it when I was at KEUL. Chuck helped finish my plane and he did my flight testing for me. Chuck had lots of stories of David and his Rocket. I will agree, there are no better built planes than these two guys built! You are lucky to have them both.

David has made a couple things for me including an air chuck I can easily use to fill up my tires without taking the pants off. Have fun with your new plane and glad you had a good trip.

So glad to hear that such a MAGNIFICENT Rocket has a wonderful new caretaker. Enjoy those new wings…

Visiting David’s shop and home is always a magical experience, isn’t it Rod? David told me that you were goign to be caretaker of the Rocket, and I was pleased to hear it - and to hear that it is home safe, and in good company!

We’re working on the logistics of becoming the caretakers of David’s long-gestating “Ultimate -3” project - I’m sure you got to see it while you were there. Louise and I are planing to fly down there in a couple days to begin collecting and packing the bits and pieces so that we can be ready for a trailer trip to bring the project back here. That’s the easy part - the tough part will be finishing the airplane to the same standards that David has established along the way - we’ve already had offers from some top-of-the-line experts to help on specific parts of the finishing.

Enjoy the Rocket - it’s got a magnificent pedigree!

Aw shucks ...

HFS

P.S. - Some of my EZ-TOOLS will be making their way to OSH to hang out in Ken Krueger's Sky Designs booth (Ultralites), go by and take a look to see if any of them can help build/maintain your aircraft. This is not a for profit business for me - just trying to help the "community" moving forward.

I basically charge materials cost, a (very) little bit for my time, R & D and processing.

Everything I make is "open source", so if you want one and can - just do it. If you want to make them for sale at a market price point that works - just do it. I'll help in any way I can.

These tools are all very simple ideas, but that simply work. I'll post some pics of the tools going in another post to give you a "heads up" about what's there.

Go by and see Ken & Susan anyway - two of the nicest people on this planet (or any other probably!).

Sorry, who is Chuck?
He’s good friends with HFS (David Howe) and he built a fantastic RV-3! Do you really need to know any more?

😜

Actually, he’s a really nice guy and an extremely talented builder and innovator similar to HFS. He is a retired Navy Commander, retired UPS captain, dedicated husband, and a great friend. He currently owns and operates a highly modified RV-6 that rivals David’s Rocket in terms of craftsmanship and innovation.

@ Paul Dye: I heard about your recent visit as well as your upcoming visit to retrieve the RV-3.5 project. I have to say that I was a bit jealous that I wasn’t the one to take on the completion of David’s project. From a purely rational standpoint, however, I fully realize you’re the best choice for the job.

I can’t wait to see the finished product and hereby volunteer David’s Rocket for a sibling photo shoot when the time comes. Heck, as far as I’m concerned, David is welcome to be PiC in the Rocket for the event!

I’ll make another trip out to California in the near future to rent a cargo van to drive all the Rocket support equipment back to my house near Denver. If anyone along that route of travel needs anything transported, please feel free to send a PM. I’ll technically be starting in Bakersfield as I’m going to be picking up a few parts and pieces from John Harmon while I’m in the vicinity.

I remember banging around the Lemoore area back in the day. I think I've at least done 1 landing in every airport and many of the dirt strips in the valley. I miss the days of $45/hr (wet) in the Navy flying club T-34s.

That Rocket is gorgeous! Hope you're able to fly the pants off her.

Here are a couple pictures of Chucks 6XXL. The coolest thing is the motorized canopy! This is the nicest RV I have seen. IMG_2768.jpgIMG_2769.jpg

Chuck's RV6XXL is the coolest, most innovative RV build in existence and its undergone a complete metamorphosis since he first started flying it.

On Mentorship

To peer upon the dazzling days of yore

When work of lonely labor valued vast,

And naught became of time begot to bore

Enough to yawn a blink upon the past,

Is stationed as a statue in the mind,

A memory of marble polished thick,

Immutable in honor of its kind,

The changes chiseled deep and coming quick,

In men of craft and talent of the tool,

With ageless eyes uncoffined to create

A majesty machined into a jewel,

Rejoicing every rivet grounded great;

In fleeting flight the soul begins to boost

Where royalty was never made to roost.

----For David Howe, on his invaluable legacy

Please tell me there's a cool story behind those boxes - whatever they are. Are they for parking precision? Rodent moats? Flat spot inhibitors?
I live in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California, where my family has been farming since 1875, highly agrarian with lots of "critters" everywhere.

The protective covers you see are to keep the mice population at bay - they (the covers) are simply segmented right angle aluminum sheets with hinge pins joining them at opposite corners. The mice haven't been a big problem for a few years, but once I caught (using sticky traps) 31 mice on ONE weekend!

About the same time, I took a short trip down to visit a builder assist facility nearby and after landing and talking with the owner for a while, a "looky lew" came in and ask how my "passenger" liked the flight? Since I flew in solo, I didn't know what he meant - upon further visual inspection of the landing light lens, guess what I saw. Yep, a little furry "passenger" looking back at me! Mice just love Tefzel insulation, and I didn't want this one to get fat on my account. After the return trip (I hope he/she/it enjoyed the view), I removed the seat cushions, tool boxes under the seat cushions and all the floorboards and set two sticky traps bated with peanut butter. When I came back the next morning, Voila - my passenger stuck tight, awaiting evac to the nearest trash receptacle ... Evidently he/she/it didn't feast too heavily overnight,as I never had any electrical related problems to that flight.

YYMV - But probably not as far as this!

I say this in all sincerity, Chuck's 6XXL is the finest example of our "species" on this planet. The magnitude and scope of his engineering modifications & the quality of his work would make your eyes water - if you were capable of understanding it all. Literally, like trying to drink from a fire hose. I am proud to call Chuck friend for 40 years and never cease to marvel at his skills. He has a -6 on the "skids" now waiting awakening soon, stay tuned ...

I have to agree with you. I really wish he was bringing it back to AV this year. I wish I could fly a tail dragger and I would fly it out and get all the glory when people saw it! Ha!!

Chuck just sent me pictures the other day of the sliding canopy on the plane he is working on now. No screws used and carbon fiber. I cant wait to see it finished. Kevin would have been so proud to have that plane.

Forgive me asking, but what's an "Air chuck" and how can we get details? Checking tyres with wheel pants on always a pain

Poor choice of words by me. It is a 6” long copper pipe straight fitting from my air hose allowing me to fill the tires through the access hole in my wheel pant.

I took Dave’s Rocket to breakfast for the first time on Monday. I happened to wake up very early, so I decided to get some seat time in the Rocket before our July temps ramped up to the mid 90’s. I ended up flying KFNL-CO12-KGXY-CO12-KFNL with multiple landings at each place. 1.6 on the Hobbs and I’m now up to a whopping 6.3 hours of Rocket time. It feels closest to an RV4 in the air and then tracks like a well-adjusted Citabria on the ground. VERY docile!

Edited to add… the Rocket is parked just beyond that fancy looking Bulldog.

I'm sure that Bulldog or one identical used to be in the UK

Turns out it did :-

That’d be pretty crazy if it was the same, exact plane. I’ll grab a serial number next time I see it. I think it’s just owned by an FAA designated examiner here in the Denver area. There are two of them running around here… planes, that is, not examiners.

Looking on G-INFO (the UK CAA Aircraft register) G-RNRS was exported to the USA, given the unusual paint job pretty sure it must be the same one. Serial number is BH100/132
