job2 Sunday found me in the perfect spot to get pics of an interesting weather phenomena. Boundary collision. From the first pic to the last was seven minutes. I’m glad we were at FL450! Also I’m very tired <g>. It was a 15 hour day and I supported a sim job3 checkride at 0900 the next morning (that’s why the Monday VAF News edition came out Monday morning instead of Sunday night). I’ve had enough airplane for a few hours LOL. Hoping to visit my RV-6 Tuesday to remove a panel or two (annual).

RE: uAvionix status update
…MacCool
I finally got around to installing the EchoUAT altitude encoder. Pretty straightforward process. EchoUAT was installed on the right wing inspection panel so I decided to forego tapping into the static system. I updated the software and firmware per uAvionix' instructions using my iPhone, then ground tested as they recommended. I flew about 30 min south and ran a PAPR, came back with no errors.
Yesterday, I flew about 30 minutes north at 2000 feet AGL, about 250 miles from the Canadian border, an area where ADS-B coverage is known to be spotty. I ran a PAPR and it came back with multiple failures. I sent the report off to [email protected] and requested a manual review, That came back promptly and confirmed that the errors were to due being in a poor coverage area at too low an altitude, and that the unit was working normally.

RE: Cowl Heat Buildup …MCLEODPILOT
Wow... I'm glad you mentioned what you did. I am also having a problem with excess heat building up in the avionics compartment... when I climb out after a flight the metal foreskin panel is wicked-hot... and if I do a couple touch & go's or fly around the pattern slow too long my iPad A17 overheats and must be shut down! I suppose heat is radiating through the firewall... but if heat is also getting into the aft cheek cowl area that may be also adding heat to the SIDE of the avionics compartment. Hmmm.... I'm going to investigate this a bit. I was planning on fabricating some sort of "scoop" to place by the vent at the right rudder pedal with a small section of scat tube to shoot air up into and swirl around the avionics area. On my next flight I'm going to check the sidewalls where the cheek cowl fairing passes by to see if I'm getting excess heat from there.
The iPad MINI A17 is in a mount with a cooling fan behind it... but the air apparently does not circulate enough OR the air is just too hot. It fits fairly tight, so I just fabricated a small Z-bracket that will allow the top of the iPad to extend a bit without falling out so that cooling air can flow up and out. Then I can check during flight to feel how hot that air is. Will be interesting to see what is going on with my thermal budget behind the instrument panel...

Clouds Forming Over 7 Minutes - Doug Reeves
6/29/2025 by Doug Reeves from FL450. The time from picture one to the last is seven minutes. The last two video captures are off the web the next day. We deviated about 10* to the north to go around the northern most part of the buildup. Right after we passed it center started recommending...

uAvionix status update
So for same flight you are missing on flight aware, what does the FAA performance report show? Im guessing uAvionics is going to ask, and likely don’t care about your issue with it not showing up on a third party tracking product. YMMV That's a good point, however, after both flights I...

RV-4 CHEEK COWL REPAIR
This RV-4 I picked up a few months ago has a strange "cut" or "rub through" where the right cheek cowl fits under the engine cowl. It appears that is was sanded down from the outside since there is no apparent wear on the under side of the engine cowl where it over lays this defect. I want to...
