Where mine is. Size and shape were determined by duct taping various shapes and sizes of wood in various locations on the rudder before I found the exact place it worked the best. She cruises feet-on-the-floor!
Trial-and-error but you get to do a lot of flying to figure it out!

Have any RV-8A owner installed an ACK E-04 ELT? I'm having a problem finding a satisfactory place to mount the antennae. The sliding canopy eliminates the aft fuselage, under the the canopy just behind the rear seat perhaps? Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks , Jim
