Simpson racing harness

Sooooo........I read the article in EAA magazine about Simpson harnesses and was wondering if anyone has mounted it in a 6 or 6A and what it entailed? Which version did you use? I like the idea of a crotch strap to keep the harness from riding up.

Thanks,
Dan

I have the Crow 5-point harnesses. I think they are about the same price as Simson and they already sell a version for the RVs. Might be the better way to go. Note: I haven't read the article you referenced, so maybe there is something I am missing.

Colin,
How did you secure the centerstrap? Pics would be awesome!
Thanks

I used the VANs 5th point kit for the RV-7, but cut off one side of the brackets and replaced it with a piece of angle so I could adjust the width. I also replaced all the belt ends from crow with standard triangular ends since they are shorter.

Nicely done!!

I installed Simpson 7 point harnesses in my 6 many years ago and like them a lot. I believe it’s when they initially started with an aviation division. I spoke to them at Oshkosh and he talked about the seven point harness versus the five point. He sold me on the seven point as it holds your lower hips stationary during an accident. Their representative told me that it is the small whiplash during impact that causes your back to break. So by completely wrapping around each thigh, it locks the bottom of your back in place. Long story, but I went for it and they have been in my plane ever since. Look good also. I figured if they were good enough for top fuel dragsters they were probably good enough! lol

I am a well-known fan of Crow, having used theme for over twenty years now. Matt (the owner/president) has a big binder where he keeps the design data fr every experimntal aircrfat that he has done - all the RV’s are in there, as well as many others. We have 5-points in the RV-3, -8, the new Rocket, and Loki (the little jet). I had resisted putting the five-points in the RV-6 becasue I didn;t want to go to the worj of fabricating a crotch-strap anchor, but Matt now makes a “6-point” where the crotch strap attachment goes to the seat belt anchors. This “Y” goes fromt eh crotch strap and under the cushions (under your thighs basicaly) and keeps you from submarining. He told me this is a very common design in race cars (their primary business). Great little company, eager to work with customers on customization.
