During this year’s condition inspection on my 6 found the engine mount was broken in 3 spots.

A buddy who just had his 4 engine mount repaired referred me to Russ McCutcheon.

Russ was super responsive with a game plan. Shipped the mount to him and he had it repaired the next day and shipped back for a great price.

The mount came back with purdy rock solid welds. If you need help with a busted engine mount Russ is the guy to call. Super responsive, outstanding welds and lightning fast.

Now THAT is service. Vans could learn a lesson about customer service from this!

Also, in shot 6980 and 82 you can see a pocket that was created during the repair. The inside of the pocket needs to be protected from rust.

Actually, this is a very normal repair on an RV-6 engine mount, while not ideal, it is normal. As far as the reinforcement goes, that is Van's fix for this known problem and all the RV-7 and -9 mounts have this reinforcement installed when new. Mostly this reinforcement eliminates the problem.

For anyone dealing with this in the future... my opinion is that there is a much better fix for this issue.

The lateral bracing tube (where the inboard crack is located on its inboard end) should be removed and replaced with a longer tube that will reach inboard to terminate adjacent to, but just outside of the lug for the bottom inboard engine mount attach bolt.

Because the current configuration has the tube only going to the mid point on the bottom lateral tube, the tension load that is always cycling on the bottom lateral tube is constantly flexing that tube at the mid point where the crack occurs. This flexing also allows a rotation movement of the gear leg socket and its associated structure which precipitates the cracks in that area as well.

If the brace tube were tied to the engine mount adjacent to the inboard mount attach bolt, I think all of the flexing would be greatly reduced, and the cracking issue might be totally eliminated.
