Oshkosh Garmin GTN navigator chart data subscription - Jepp vs Garmin navdata

I typically renew my chart data as Oshkosh to get the show deal on navdata at the Garmin booth. This year I decided to take a look at Jepp.

$300 for a year from Garmin at the show
vs
$130 for a year from Jepp at the show and on their website

- both include navdata for the US, Canada, Caribbean, etc.

I bought the Jepp.

Anyone use Jepp or have a reason the Garmin subscription provides something the Jepp does not?

I use Jeppesen, and have found no difference between Jeppesen & Garmin data.

As a matter of fact, I wonder if Garmin actually uses Jeppesen data as their source?

AFAIK ANSPs provide their data to Jepp who then pass it on to hardware vendors. Honeywell, Garmin etc. they then put it into whatever format needed for their hardware and on sell it.
As for differences… Garmin add unnamed step down fixes into approaches between the IF and the FAF - whereas Jepp don’t.
It’s very annoying… I don’t think it’s likely a problem in the USA, but for Aus and Europe it’s actually downright dangerous.

Sounds like prices have changed a lot since I first purchased database subscriptions for my RV-14A in 2019. At that time, Jepp subscriptions were 4x the cost I ended up paying to get the same databases from Garmin. I was using Jeppesen for the 430 in my Archer at the time and assumed I would stay with them. Garmin was just getting into the subscription market. Sounds like it is time to reassess.

It looks like the nav data does not include approach plates. Am I missing something?

i’m a bit confused now. i have NA nav data for GPS175 from garmin at 300/yr. this has the IFR approaches, T routes, SID/STARs, all the RNAV stuff. No obstacles or safetaxi or plates (that comes separately with HDX and Garmin pilot subscriptions )

If Jep 130 subscription covers the IFR nav I’ll switch today.

Ok, the $130 price is for the VFR database. IFR is much more.

$130 IS for IFR navdata

Per Jepp sales folks
$130 valid to the 30th of September online as well as at the show until it ends.
- subscription for the one year
- “navdata” gets you faa compliant gps fixes for enroute, sids, stars, and approachs
- normally $366
- was told typical Oshkosh discount is 25% off of $366 at the show only and no online

If you want “Aeronautical data” (base map, terrain, obstacles, safe taxi, ifr/vfr sectional) the price goes WAY up

I use the GTN for IFR legal gps points and don’t try to read a chart or plates on the gps. Safe taxi has also provided me little value on the 650xi’s small screen. $130 gets you legal GPS points.
