I'm New Here
I have ordered one of the MOSAIC compliant IMC capable RV-12 S-LSAs from Vans, with current delivery estimate of September of this year. I currently have my PPL (just about a month ago, so still an extreme newbie), but am studying IFR currently, and plan on progressing to CFI and instructing in the RV-12 eventually. As a new pilot, I am wondering what "comes with" the RV-12 S-LSAs, in addition to what I should be prepared with in general. I will be picking up the airplane in Oregon, and flying it back to NC over a week or so (weather permitting, planning the north route across ID, WY, MT, SD, then fairly direct to NC, with stops/flyovers of key scenic areas). FWIW, I will also be taking the two-week LSR-M class later this year. I currently have enough of an understanding of engines to change oil and a little more, but also have secured an A&P at my airport who has said he would work with me after I take the class to help me be able to perform more maintenance, or to do anything that is above my head (which I assume will be a lot).
1. The POH says I must carry spare fuses: one each of 2A, 3A, and 10A; two 5A and 30A; and three 7.5A. Will those spares be given with the plane? Or will I need to already have those for the trip home? Would it be fine to just carry the minimum, or should I have extras? Where would these be purchased?
2. Fire extinguisher: suggestions on a good one to get, that won't eat too much into the useful load and/or baggage space?
3. Chocks and tie-downs: I planned to getting some light-weight of each to keep in the airplane.
4. First-aid kit: tapes (foam and fabric), bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, band-aids, sunscreen.
5. Survival kit: multi-tool, fire starter, paracord, emergency blanket, signaling mirror, water purifier, whistle; and some kind of vest or bag that I can wear/attach to me when I'm flying in more rural areas where such items could be needed in an emergency.
6. Cleaning supplies: mainly thinking canopy cleaner and several microfiber cloths, but would plan on keeping other types of cleaners in the hangar as those wouldn't be necessary for immediate use. Any specific types of cleaners to get? Or ones that are marketed to be important, but wouldn't actually be needed?
7. In my flight bag I have a battery pack big enough to charge my phone/iPad multiple times, a PLB, spare batteries for headset, rechargeable red/white flashlight, and charging cords for all devices. Thinking about a handheld radio but haven't pulled the trigger on that yet.
8. I plan on keeping oil, oil filters, and fuses on hand. Are there any other items that I should keep in stock at my hangar? And are there specific sources that I should get supplies from (or ones that I should not trust)?
I appreciate any input/advice... I tried to make a fairly comprehensive list, and could make the argument that I am being overly prepared, but also I'm sure that things will be pointed out where I am underprepared. I'm ready to hear any constructive criticism or questioning of any of my ideas. I'm here to learn about and enjoy flying, and want to do whatever I can to maximize positive outcomes. Thanks!
