Introducing … The Valkyrie Known as Myst!

The F1 flew for the first time this morning, and earned her name – the Valkyrie known as “Myst”. We did the first and second flights before noon - the first a quick short hop over the field to verify proper handling and engine/system operations (EAA Test Card 1) and the second (Test Card 2) to check out the flaps and – more importantly – to experiment with power settings and temperature control. CHT #1 is considerably warmer than the other five, so I’ll trim the forward air damn to equalize those. Oil temp got up to 197, but stabilized there (warm, but in reasonable limits) – so we’ll play with that a little. The airplane flies hands off straight and level once trimmed in pitch and is smooth and powerful. I have to do some prop adjustment as I am not getting to full RPM – and that is a little tricky to adjust because it is hard to run up to full power on the ground – but it’s doable and we’ll get that taken care of. On the second flight, we let her run to 197 knots in level flight at 9.000’ – and that was with reduced RPM, so performance is promising…. 😉

I want to thanks all the folks that have contributed advice, lessons learned – and in some cases parts and hands-on help- in this two-year project. Too many to name here, but the support of Louise – even as I spent way too much time out in the shop – was key to getting this done. The workbench is now hers in its entirety for the RV-15!

Louise was test Director/Ground Crew Chief this morning….

The name?

Many do not know that in the old Norse stories, there were many Valkyries with many names. Each one has characteristic unique to their personality. The Valkyries are tasked by Odin with gathering the souls of great warriors and deciding which ones deserve to be in the halls of Valhalla.

Myst is not like the other Valkyries.

Where they rode in thunder and steel, she moved unseen before the clash. She walked among warriors in their final moments—not to choose the strongest, but the truest. She revealed to each the reality of their soul: courage, regret, love, or fear. Those who stood firm in that truth, she marked for Valhalla. Those who faltered, she left to other fates.

Odin, the allfather said …”only in the mist do men lose their illusions. And only without illusion can they be truly seen.”

To this day, when fog rolls low across a field where blood has been spilled, the old skalds say Myst walks there still—guiding, revealing, and choosing—not by strength of arm, but by truth of soul.

Looked & sounded great in the air, your landing looked like it was # 500 not the first one.

Congrats on the new fledgling :D

Myst heck. Should be called Duster because that’s what you going to do to all those other planes.

Beautiful and with six cylinders, loud and proud. Louise is gonna look great in it as she waves to you zooming by. 🤣

Paul, congratulations on another beautiful build with the Rocket. BTW, I knew Mark Fredrick personally and worked with Mark on several projects. I helped him on the avionics on his last project and really wanted to buy it but had committed to the RV15.

Tell Louise that I really like her progress posting's and to keep up the good work.

Congratulations. We wanted to come by and check it out last night but never made it over there. Can’t wait to see it in person

Nice! Is that a new matching helmet as well? 🤔
Not new - it was painted to match the little jet when we built that, and I have a common theme…. 😉

(At that time, I decided to treat myself to a full new Kevlar Gentex helmet and had John Stahr paint the shell before FlightHelmets.com assembled it. One of life’s little luxuries. I still fly with the old gray helmet from my old days on occasion - but the lighter weight shell is very nice!)

It's a wonderful theme, Paul, and having plenty of Nordic blood in these veins I can certainly appreciate your affinity for the mythologies in that part of the world. The soul-searching aspect of your chosen Valkyrie is also quite germane to the times: a whole lot more is in store, not just in this country, but for the very planet around which your career carried you, albeit vicariously. Congratulations on a marvelous capstone accomplishment, and may your journeys in Myst carry you far beyond the realm of imagination!

I always enjoy a little Norse History

Congrats Paul. Sexy looking bird. What are your thoughts on the Test Phase flight #1 as far as 1st landing no flaps? Seems a little strange to me and not stacking the deck in favor of the pilot. If at altitude they function like they should and don't cause control issues....

Definitely check slow flight with flap ups per test card though

Remember that the FLight test manual was written to serve all types of aircraft in all sorts of conditions - from series-built kits (like RV’s) which are well-understood to one-off radical designs no one has ever flown before. That means that when you read the manual and use the cards, you should ask yourself if what they are asking for is appropriate in your situation. In the case of flaps/no flaps on first flight, this is sort of like gear retract or not on first flight with a retractable undercarriage. With a totally new type of aircraft, you want to minimize configuration changes on the first flight. For something like an RV, its far less risky to change confgurations, so yeah - after dropping and retracting flaps at altitude to make sure they weren’t assymetric, I landed with full flaps the way I do with any RV in light winds.

By the same token, I threw away test card #3, “gear operation”…..😉
