Garmin Pilot adds Mobile Clearance Delivery

How does this differ from ForeFlight? (I think I just figured out the answer, see the last line of this post).
I just subscribed to Garmin Pilot and I’m thinking I will let my FF expire. With FF you get acknowledgment when you File the flight plan, followed up by another email with your expected clearance.

It sounds like this might be giving you the actual clearance before take off ??

I have not filed a flight plan with GP yet. Prior to this feature being announced, what kind of acknowledgement did you get with Garmin Pilot?

I just re-read the announcement and it appears that it is the actual clearance because it specifically references getting the clearance at an un-towered airport and Class D airports when the tower is closed. Very Cool.

this also works in GP. Expected clearance can be applied to the flight plan over the original filed route.

Yes this sounds similar to PDC.

I'm going to miss reading back CRAFT when they roll it out everywhere.

ForeFlight also has mobile clearance delivery. Biggest difference - it’s better than the one in Garmin Pilot. ;) More features, and a better user interface..

looks like mobile PDC requires premium sub in FF, more expensive than GP premium by about 30 gallons of avgas..

This is true for PDC but not the mobile clearance delivery that was released by the FAA today. That is available for all subscription tiers. However, you’re right that Garmin requires a premium tier subscription for the feature.

Since it was just announced yesterday by GP and FF, please tell us more about the additional features and user interface that FF has over GP. Hard to tell just from the press releases from both of them.
 
I just wish the little touch ring thing was reliable. On my phone I frequently touch the map, get the little ring menu, but then none of the options work until I restart the app. Support always tells me to reload the app, but that never fixes the issue long term.

Between this and the TFR bug on the G3X I’m starting to wonder if to use Garmin is to accept that there will be unresolved bugs.
 
I hope this comes to their Android app too. I use an ipad, but my day to day phone is Android and having it on both has been so nice!

To the best of my knowledge I have never seen that bug and have been using GP on many devices over the years on iOS. I know that does not help you but it is just a data point.
 
The FAA page promises a wide spread rollout in 2027.. Some areas seem to be limited to specific airports and others will have the entire center or TRACON coverage
The difference from PDC seems to be that there is no intermediary like Honeywell for the data feeds, ie FF and GP interface directly with the ATC computers..

The largest feature gap between the two is that FF has a map of your cleared & filed route , whereas Garmin Pilot does not. The seems minor on a short flight, but for a flight that’s longer, or goes around weather, knowing where the cleared route takes you before accepting it is a huge advantage, IMO.

I also find the FF user interface to be clearer and smoother to follow, start to finish.

Both companies were given a tight timeline to finish this project, so I’d expect additional features to come from both in time.

I have GP on the ipad and a samsung tablet. If anything the android version lags behind. There is still no Smart Charts feature on android and the last update was in April this year. The IOS updates are released each month like clockwork.
