G5 without the GAD 29 ARINC box

For this last build I replaced the backup airspeed steam gauge with a G5. The G5 will get a GPS serial input from the GTN-650xi. Wading through the pages of install instructions there is an obvious push to add the GAD 29, and not much on just having a GPS serial input. I do not want to do that for a backup instrument for my dual SkyView install.

The question, what will the G5 do and not do with just a GPS input, power and pitot/static connections?

It should be great. It’s intrinsic gps isn’t bad either, and has built in ahrs. Just connect an external mounted gps antenna.

You get an ADI, AS, ALT, VVI, GPS Heading. If that’s all you need it works great in that setup. I used it this way for a year before adding a GNC375 with a GAD29 and magnetometer GMU11.

No it will not display any course deviation from your question without a GAD29 and navigator.

BTW it doesn’t need any GPS input if you don’t want to add it since it has a GPS antenna inside the screen.

That's not quite correct... if you have a GPS navigator connected to your G5 using only RS-232, not ARINC 429, you will be able to see basic VFR (lateral) navigation data, without IFR annunciations or IFR CDI scaling. This will be sufficient for VFR / enroute purposes but not for IFR flying or approaches.
 
Thanks all. Just off the phone with Stein and he confirms what Matt posted.

I would much rather have an updated Dynon D10A instead of the G5, but Dynon does not have one. I flew many approaches with the D10A getting fed from a GX-60 and SL-30 showing CDI and GS, with no stinking ARINC box. Too bad Dynon never replaced the D10A.

I think the G5 would show vertical deviation from an SL-30, as it is all rs-232. VHF nav has no scaling like gps. Unfortunately the garmin gps boxes use arinc to send some or all of the VHF nav data.

Yes, that's correct. Whether or not an ARINC 429 connection is required is usually down to the properties of the navigator (GPS or VHF), not the display device.
 
I’m glad I found this post.

I’m looking at a 2 AXIS screen, with a gnx375 and a g5 ADI backup instrument.

Since I have the 2 main screens, the only time I would be down to the single g5 would be if I had to turn everything off (smoke in the cockpit etc). This means the GNX375 would also be off.

Therefore the GAD29 does little for redundancy for me? The only time this might be useful would be if I had BOTH main AXIS screens fail at the same time, and still had the GNX375 - that would be the only use case where I would benefit from the CDI scaling which comes through ARINC? Without it, the gnx375 would still give me lateral navigation but just no scaling through RS-232?

Otherwise the GAD29 is of little help?

What about If the HSDB from the GNX375 failed? If I wired up the main screens (and g5) each with RS-232 as backup I would still get approach capability from the GNX375?
