Engine Speed: Half Sync

Hello all,

I fly and RV12-iS with a Rotax 912is and Dynon Skyview HDXs. On the Dynon menu/engine screen I now get the faults on the picture below. There are no codes on the Rotax ECU. The engine runs fine but the faults are troubling because they are new (I finished the plane in 2019). I have spoken to a Rotax service center and to Dynon and they don't know what it is. I am wondering if any of you have seen this.

Also, the faults occurred after my first startup after doing the 5 year rubber replacement where I had the intake manifold lifted up and many things disconnected.

Thanks,

I would turn all switches in the OFF position, disconnect negative cable from the battery.
After a few minutes connect negative cable to battery again.
Wait a few minutes then start up the system again as for a normal flight.

Good luck

Thanks Avanza. I’ll try that.

I tried it this weekend and there was no difference.
Thanks for the idea,

If you are not getting any codes from the Rotax ECU, and the engine is running fine...I think I'd be looking deeper into the Dynon side of things for a reason that it is deciding a fault exists at all.

I was checking my faults as part of the 25 hour inspection requirement and mine look exactly the same as this. As far as I can tell, this "half sync" message is a status message and not a fault.

I found the following from this link: http://www.cambridgeoperations.com/CAV13_Manual_3_0.pdf

"SYNC (Shows engine speed and sync status)
Stall: Engine stalled, no crankshaft teeth detected
Wait: Engine running but waiting for valid synchronisation
Lane: Lane is synchronised to crankshaft position (Note 1)
Both: Lane is synchronised to crankshaft position and other Lane (Note 2)

Note 1: Rotax sometimes refer to this as ‘half sync.’
Note 2: Rotax sometimes refer to this as ‘full sync.’ There is some evidence that not all ECUs correctly report full sync. on the pilot display CANbuses. "

I searched in the Dynon and Rotax documentation and didn't have any luck. You'd think they'd define what faults translate to, but I didn't see anything.

Engine is operating normally and could have had the fault there the first 25 hours I was flying.
