Crimping Tools

What crimping tool(s) do I need for an RV-14A?

Page 05-24 of the kit plans recommends BCT-1, TH-450, and ECL 300-15. Is there a single tool that can handle all of these?

There's no one do it all tool. Usually folks have a ratcheting crimper (eg RCT-1 or a SAT-001) for insulated PIDG type terminals (eg FAST-on), a 4-way detent crimper (eg (ECL 300-15, SAT-004, Daniels AFM8, an RCT-3) for DSUB pins and sockets, and an open barrel crimper (SAT-018 or a BCT-1) for Molex type pins.

A good ratchet type will have replaceable jaws for PIDG, Molex, Coax, and probably more. I have one. It does slow you down a little changing jaws.
+1 on the Daniel's AFM8. Check Ebay for the tool and Posioners. Worth every penny.
Add a good Stripmaster stripper.
And a roll of dollar bills. 😁

More like a roll of twenties!

Hi everyone
I’m installing an AV 30 in a plane I recently bought. I’ve done this twice before with the old style open barrel pins. The new ones are a round pin that requires a hard to find and expensive Daniel s AFM8 tool. The plane is in a remote area and shipping to Alaska is time consuming.

Has anyone tried soldering the wire into the sub pins? I only need a power and ground wire. Thanks!

Rick

Soldering will work but may be less reliable in the medium/long term.
Take a look at JR Ready for less expensive crimp tools

SteinAir has crimping tools for reasonable prices…

Don't forget a good pair of strippers, especially for anything smaller than 20 ga. Maybe it's me, but the number of times I've eff'd 22-26 (especially 26!) ga wire..... It's a cliche but true: I've been disappointed by cheap tools, but never by good ones.

You can get stuff cheaper other places, but Stein has occasionally answered the phone on weekends if they're in the shop working on their own airplanes, and patiently taken the time to walk me through problems. Support a family owned business of airplane builders, not parts sellers. https://www.steinair.com/?v=0b3b97fa6688
