Box trailer for moving RV-10 to paint

We are looking for a box trailer that's 96 inches wide at the door to move Jessica Cox's Impossible Airplane to paint. We've received a generous offer to comp the space and labor for an amazing paint job, but it does mean several hundred miles between where it's being finished and the paint shop. Wings, prop, and tail feathers will be in crates.

Our team has decided it's just a bit too far for a flatbed trailer, given that it's almost finished, but not quite. We also need to move quickly to find this trailer in the next couple of days if we're going to paint it in time for AirVenture. We've got a truck and driver who can move a gooseneck trailer, waiting for word on the East Coast. Sourcing a trailer from the northern Midwest area is also an option.

It's not the end of the world to skip paint for AirVenture. But it would be great if we could make it happen.

We have the wheel pants off and a shorter axle on each wheel. We're close, but it does move in and out depending on what's been added, weight-wise.
I don't think you will find an enclosed trailer wide enough for the 10 to fit in. I have a special gear leg that I fabricated to move the smaller RV aircraft with. It just requires you to remove 1 gear leg and replace it with the fabricated leg. The one I have is for the smaller diameter gear leg but you could get the right ID and OD pipe to slide over mine as my leg would need to be slightly longer to accommodate for the taller RV10. My number is 501-609-6187 if you want more information or photos. You could unbolt the axle and fabricate a new wheel on a plate that would probably get you inside a standard enclosed trailer, the problem is the length of the RV10 and the wheel wells inside. You have to put the tail cone in first and if he trailer is long enough from the wheel wells to the door ramp it will fit. I have an RV10 in my hangar I could measure to check the width if my fabricated gear leg were installed on a 10. Would be glad to help. Steve

If this doesn't help you can check with Todd at Cunningham Transport in Chandler, AZ. (623) 826-4936. They transport kit cars and aircraft. He has 18 wheeler van trailers that are equipped just for transporting aircraft. It has an overhead crain that can lift you aircraft into the trailer. I'm just not sure what the width of the trailer is but it will be the widest you will find. He has transported for me before and they are the best.

I can vouch for Todd also. He was going to handle a kit for Van's. They also handle factory 5 cars if I am correct.

He was honest with money after some screw ups also.

If it is only a couple of inches too wide you can always put a tie down strap between the legs and tighten it up to pull the gear in. I had to do that on a F1 rocket that got shipped to Germany, it worked out well.

I sold a -10 in 2009. The new owner also wanted to transport in an enclosed truck. We went thru many iterations trying to make it fit. Finally, got a forklift, we removed the legs, then slid it (using packing blankets) onto pallets inside the truck. Just need to remove antennas first. There is a limit to the width of trucks, and anything wider needs a WIDE LOAD designation and usually an escort car. Most open trailers are no issue.

Not what you asked, but I'd remove the tail feathers, cover the windshield (some combination of coroplast, packing blankets, and duct tape), load it on a suitable flatbed, and get it on the road...

I used a 4 place snow mobile trailer and had plenty of width. It also tilts for easy loading. Don’t think you will find an enclosed trailer with enough internal width. Mosy also struggle with fender wells canabilizing space.

If you are putting it into a higher trailer recommend calling a slide back tow truck to put it in and take it out. Saves lots of hassle and scary ramp fails
