A Quick Trip to Vegas…..

I had to run down to a little airpark just west/southwest of Las Vegas to do a quick aircraft inspection today. I left home in the Rocket at 0615, landed there at 0745. We got started immediately, and it IMMEDIATELY became hotter than heck in that tin hangar with no breeze. Nevertheless, an hour and a half later, we were done and I was on the way home. Arrived back at Dayton Valley about 1115. Driving from here to there? Eight hours each way. Flying airlines? Southwest runs pretty much an hourly bus service from Reno to Vegas, they block an hour from gate to gate for the flight. But you have to leave Dayton for Reno (be car) two hours before the flight. That’s arriving at LAS in three hours….then rent a car…then drive an hour to the little airpark. Reverse it to get home. Yeah, an hour and a half each way in the Rocket in the smooth, cool air at 15.5K with the A/P on and the lunar-like surface going by underneath. Time machines…..

It’ll go faster….but I like a nice round 10.0 gph (for now)…. And I really like letting down at over 200 KTAS ….

Telescope Peak (left mid-range) sits on the west side of Death Valley (hidden behind the closer range), and in the distance there is still snow on the high Sierra (Mt. Whitney).

I was just in your neck of the woods. Spent last night in LoveLock (KLOL) on my way back from Boise to San Martin (E16). The late afternoon storms were tossing us around pretty good and I didn’t want to continue until this morning. Passed over Dayton at 10.5

The efficiency and versatility of the Rocket is indeed eye watering!
I can’t help but notice how high your temps are with the OAT just below freezing.
It took me 2 summers of flying in my HRII to get everything dialed in so she would stay cool here in AZ: aux oil cooler, plunger, cowl flaps, oil cooler duct air shutters, and balancing the injection to enable leaner operation.
I look forward to lots of reports as you get things perfect. Following your build, testing, and initial operating experience has been a real treat! Thanks!
