MT Prop Governor questions and pcu5000 retrofit

I had an MT prop governor model D on my plane and it started surging. I was going to send it to Co for overhaul when I discovered there were long standing issues with these governors, particularly when they’re coupled w a metal Hartzell. This necessitated me sending the governor to MT instead so they could upgrade it to a -H model. They said 1-2 weeks and overhaul price was now $1600 instead of $700 in Co.

I call a week after it arrived, guy on the phone says 3-4 weeks, and I politely mention there was a 1-2 week lead time provided to me, he says he’ll move it up in the queue (he did not). MT finally followed up on the governor on Thursday, and discovered it hadn’t been started yet, quoting me another week to get it done bringing the total time to over a month.

I would feel a bit more comfortable if I knew that the new governor was going to function properly, but it seems many people continued to have issues even with their updated MT governors. Anyone running a -H MT governor in their plane? Experiences?

An PCU5000x is “only” an extra $500. Im considering cutting my losses and buying this to retrofit it. Anything to be cognizant of when doing so? Should I just wait it out with MT?

Wait it out.. sounds like you should receive it soon. Then try it out and you'll have the answer

An update:

MT called me with my finished governor and wanted me to pay $2700, quoted $1600. Yep, done with them. They just needlessly cost me a month of downtime, but it's aviation so I will go with "who knows what would have happened if I was flying"

Big shout out to Dan from West Coast Prop Governor. I gave him a call and he told me he'd build me a McCauley today and send it to me tomorrow. Hope it works out!

My MT prop gov self-destructed in flight leading to an over speed back in 2016. MT completely washed their hands of it stating it was an experimental installation (Barrett rebuilt IO-540 with a AFP FI system so no longer certified coupled with a Hartzell BA 2-blade prop) do therefore had no responsibility even though they issued SB 31 not a week later so they knew something was an issue.. Luckily insurance covered the subsequent tear down and a new prop. I’ll never buy an MT product of any type ever again. I switched to a PCU5000X.
