…. so you folks who didn’t go to Oshkosh, what did you do with your RV this weekend? Same goes for those who just got back from the fly-in.

Flew from KOSH to some friends' home airfield near Tulsa. They found us a hangar to overnight in and then lent us a vehicle to drive to our daughters so we could go play with our newest grandson and watch him roll over for the first time. Flew home the next evening. Great friends' and great times!

It was a week for me. 18.3 hours, 2738 NM, 1 Instrument approach, average speed 149 knots.

Monday flew to KOSH. Arrived after the airshow.

Saturday flew KAPA to 14A. Just a little IFR 😳 and a long day!

Flew home from OSH (3,700 sm round trip) but dropped off my son in Las Vegas on the way back so he could hope in my wife's car and head out on Yet Another Vacation while I go back to work. Some life this kid is leading!

You can't really tell from the photo, but the quick turn in Las Vegas (Henderson, actually) was unpleasant. 117 degrees on the tarmac, according to my OAT gauge. That's challenging when you're in an airplane with a canopy. There was nothing going on around the airport, but the controller was glacially slow in responding to my radio calls. When he finally did reply, it was "Standby." Five minutes later, I call him again. Same answer. Five minutes later, with my oil temp already at 215 and rising, he grudgingly gives me a taxi clearance.

The Class B airspace keeps you low when you depart, so I got to see the transponder, iPad, CO detector, and a bunch of other avionics fail or shut down due to the intense heat. Thankfully the G3X and G5 never missed a beat, and everything else came back to life once I climbed into cooler air (which is all relative, I suppose; at 12,500' MSL it was ISA +25C.
