Stby Alternator SD 20

Getting ready to install my RV7 engine. Titan IO360 with dual Pmag’s and a 45 degree oil filter adapter. The SD20 is not fitting. It appears it is interfereing with the oil filter adapter. Any suggestions on how to proceed? The extension is 3.5 inches long. It’s what came with the engine.

Nothing here is going smooth

Thanks in advance

I suspect you have two options:
- Ditch the oil filter adapter.
- Send the SD-20 back for a refund and replace with the Monkworkz 30 amp generator.

Walt,
When you say straight oil filter adaptor, is there a specific length or just the stock one? No issues in the RV7 as far as clearing the engine mount?

It works - I have the same pieces on my IO360. See below, I'll dig up other photos.

Stock Lycoming or Superior

Greg,
When you say it works, what do you mean- the angle adapter works, just remove the extension? Didn’t see an extension in your photo.

I have a stock Lycoming (purchased as a B1B) with Superior cold-air sump - but the sump doesn't affect those parts. I have quite a few more pictures here from my build log showing those parts, perhaps you can look at them and have that "ah-HA!" moment.

I can always run out to the hangar and measure standoffs or adapters if you like. It does appear that removing the angle-filter extension might be the trick you are looking for.

Got the SD20 on. Now trying to install bolts for the oil filter housing. Thought AN4, but the threads are all wrong. Trying to find a reference in a overhaul manual. No joy yet. What am I missing?

Would a shorter spacer work? I used AEL106-2 - 1.40 inch (AEL22776-114)? on my similar IO-540 RV installation.

I used the sd20 as a stand alone alternator on my RV along with a EarthX battery. Battery lasted 1 yr. Apparently the alternator didn’t produce enough charging power on the ground and in the pattern and that was enough to prematurely wear out the battery. So I added a standard alternator and put a switch on the dash so I could switch between alternators. Problem solved. Could have added another voltage regulator I guess but I got lazy. Lost an alternator v-belt on a trip and just flipped a switch en route continued on. Great backup alternator.

The SD20 is actually rated (despite its name) at 32 amps 14 volts at full engine rpm. It mounts on the vacuum pad, whose drive gear turns at 1.3:1 for the main crankshaft; 2700 engine rpm gives 3510 rpm on the alternator.
