Replacing the S-1-79 Hartzell governor with the PCU 5000X prop governor

My S-1-79 has reached its service limits and rather than rebuilding I want to replace it withthr PCU-5000X. Has anyone done this yet retrofit?

I had a similar, although not exactly the same, governor on my IO 540.

I purchased my PCU 5000X directly from the manufacturer, Jihostroj a.s. in Europe, and had it shipped to me. Installation was fairly straightforward.

When ordering, make sure you select the correct control arm direction so that your propeller cable moves and controls the governor in the proper direction. Also, ask the manufacturer to preset the governor for your engine’s maximum propeller RPM.

Other than that, the installation was quite simple. I have been very happy with my PCU 5000.

Thanks Vlad. I'm struggling with the PCU to the IO-390 mounting the most.. The legacy Hartzell governor was attached to the faceplate but I'm not sure the PCU is attached the same way. Is this the case with yours? If so maybe you could attach a pic. That always helps.

My IO390, 210 hp version (RV-14A) from the beginning used a PCU5000X (stock Vans cowling and WW300 prop) and no issues now 800+ hrs. Just one more data point. Purchased under a VAF “group buy” in the 2017 time frame.

-390 forward mount. Had to close up the baffles a little since this is smaller than the one the -14 baffles were made for. Very happy with the performance.

I talked to Blake to see if any RV-14's has done the swap out after the build to see how they handled the 100 degrees of control arm arc versus the 120 degrees of arc on the PCU 5000X, attaching the bracket from the legacy Hartzell config, etc. Unfortunately he didn't have an RV-14 spec sheet on hand. I'll get one to him after I'm done. I'm just trying to get it right the first time. My plane has been done for a month now so I'm trying to gather back up as soon as I can but with better equipment.
