LA basin transit tips?

Any hints on negotiating the LA megaplex? I'm going to pick up a family member probably at Camarillo later this month and reterning to Phoenix. Any problem going VFR GPS direct from Banning to Camarillo up high, or is it better to follow the VFR flyway along the north side of the area? How accomodating is SOCAL approach? Also, is Camarillo a good choice? I'm heading to the northwest side of the valley. Any insites would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Camarillo is a good choice if it is handy for your passengers. By going Banning-Pomona-Camarillo you will clear all of the class B and, at the correct altitude, you wouldn't have to talk to anyone. ;) But please don't do that! SoCal is very used to working light aircraft in that area. Use flight following, it will make it a lot easier. You are going to be in some busy airspace so keep your head on a swivel.
