Air filter fitting ???

Python

Member
Hi, I’m looking at a solution to a problem I have with my RV 6 ( O 320) air filter fitting. The problem is that someone has hacked away at the air filter ( K&N E-3260) & filled with silicone as per the photos, I don’t like the look of it at all. The bottom of the Carby plunger & some of the body protrudes below the flat surface on the Carby (see photos)Has anyone seen this before & if so do they have;solution. Thanks 🐍

If you look at the plans it might be that this was done per the plans. lots of discussion about this on the forum from time to time?

That's pretty much how the plans have you do it on the O-320. That isn't the neatest silicone job I've seen, but it should work fine.

This "solution" involving the removal of material from the filter element and the application of red silicon is pretty standard on the Vans Airbox. I'm not saying its a pretty standard, but it is pretty much the standard. As an engineer I have never liked it but I must admit that it works and best of all, it works well. All the normally aspirated Vans aircraft I've worked on employ this solution.

There is an alternative K&N filter that can be used that does not require the cutout. I cannot recall the number at the moment but I did order one with the intention of trying it. I found the replacement filter was not as rugged as the original and a new bottom plate needed to be cut out so that is sitting in my things to do pile. If you want to see more info do a search through the archives.
Meanwhile I will continue to use the cut filter as it does seem to work ok if you do it carefully enough and I haven’t seen any evidence of dust or dirt getting through.
