And now for something (almost) completely different….

My little Subsonex JSX-2 is for sale. No, it’s not an RV….. but just like Mowgli in The Jungle Book, this airplane lived with RV’s its entire life, it wears the same paint job as its big, adopted sisters the “Valkyrie” and “Myst”, and it flies in the normal rotation of Valkyrie (RV-8), Mikey(RV-6) and Tsamsiyu(RV-3) – so he thinks he’s an RV as well!

VAF is for RV’s – I have always believed that. But Doug has created a huge community of people that love flying machines and he granted me permission to advertise the airplane here because, well…the Sonex forums and pages are populated by great people who think that $35K is an excessive amount to pay for an airplane – not exactly the place the potential jet drivers are going to go lurking. But VAF is a place for discerning aviators who are often looking for their next challenge and experience! If you have ever hankered for your own personal jet as your next aircraft – here it is, ready to fly.

For Sale – N958PD – “Loki”

Sonex JSX-2 personal jet
Quick Build kit completed in 2019

Why Selling: This fun little airplane has given me a lot of enjoyment and a sense of achievement for the 220 hours I have flown it. There is no doubt that when you arrive at the fly-in breakfast as “the guy in the jet”, it gets attention. But I have lots of airplanes that need to be flown, and most of my Subsonex flights have become the same – so it is time to pass it on for someone else to enjoy (and build turbine time…). The engine just came back from its first overhaul (I have flown it twice since then to prove it out), so it is fresh and ready for years of flying.

This thing is about to make someone's dream come true.

Wish I had anywhere close to the kind of experience to take advantage of this little beast.

Good luck Paul!

How would one go about getting checked out in it?
Bob Carlton (Airshow pilot) used to be the contact for an LOA and then the Experimental Aircraft Authorization (E-AB equivalent of a Type Rating) - I’ll have to see if he is still the contact, or if someone else has set up to do it.

If it were the 2T, I'd be all over it.
Not once you research how the operational rules change when you go from one seat to two in a turbine……😉

The single seat, single engine, Experimental jet fits a - shall we say - “unique” niche in the FAA rules regarding turbine pilot currency…. to the individual owner/pilot’s advantage….

Is that why sonex had been slow rolling their two seat version?

I’d buy it in a heartbeat if I had the $$ sitting around right now! It’s probably a good thing I’m not quite old enough to pull from my 401k just yet!

i always wondered if airlines still count this as turbine time or dismiss it all together?
I don't know about airlines today, but when I flew they had propellers and pistons  (anyone here remember the Heron?), but when I flew helicopters for a living which was a lot more enjoyable than the boring airline flights, turbine time was looked at mostly to gauge your experience during start ups and engine management, because you can destroy a turbine in seconds before it even gets to completely start if you don't know what you're doing, or if your inexperience lets your mind wander off for a second.

<< Is the engine TBO 200+/- hours? >>

Per Paul's 2024 article (referenced in #12) - "For this reason, inspections and overhauls are done on hours and/or cycles—a cycle being a start and a stop. For the PBS TJ-100, you have to have it factory inspected at 300 hours or 600 cycles (whichever comes first), then again at another 300/600. At a total of 900 hours or 1800 cycles it becomes a trophy for your mantle and you buy another one. In short, you don’t want to use up your cycles before the hours."

This is all completely true - and the reality of it is that there is one more thing - the calendar. Its 300 hours, 600 cycles, or 5 years….and the factory won;t touch it for the overhaul if you don;t observe the one that hits first. And the reality is - unless you’re making a living with it (somehow), you are never going to hit hours or cycles before you hit the calendar limitation.

Oh - someone asked me in a PM about trainign and qualifications. Bob Carlton (Desert Aerospace in Moriarty, NM and airshow performer) is still the Go To guy for training and getting the rating added to your license. Its fun, doesn’t take long….but don’t do Moriarty in August….

Ironflight,
Good of you to let one "fly the nest" if not being used enough.
Happy Landings,

Noticed yesterday that they've placed sister ship (N141SX, the prototype) on display at southside admission gate.

I flew Bob Carlton's BonusJet (a two place glider converted to turbojet self launch) and was on the ground while others had their demo flights. Let's just say the noise of that engine is unmistakable.

Does she even know she's not an RV? Analogous to like my dog really just thinks he's a smaller person :)

Also, this detail is so nerdy cool :D

Oh wow I would love to have this, I had a deposit on 2 seater kit before they originally canceled it. Now I don't have the room and only 1800' strip! Wonderful and beautiful airplane, envious of whoever gets it.
