I've camped by the airplane in HBC about 14 straight, but this year may be different. Looks like the plan is to drop off Ms. Patti for a mother/daughter week, and drive to OSH. That means Camp Scholler.

Trouble is, all my friends are over at HBC...a long way from the far south reaches of Scholler. So how does an old guy with worn landing gear get around?

A bicycle is pretty obvious. I have one, but I'm not going to be a big fan of pedaling the grass/mud roads.

Also have a small ATV, a 250 Beartracker. My understanding is that unlicensed ATVs, although technically not permitted, are common inside Scholler. However, I kinda doubt I could use it to reach HBC or the Social on Waukau. True/false? Same for a golf cart or other unlicensed vehicle?

Last year I camped in Scholler, rode the bike from there to the gate then walked the rest of the way to HBC. Its a bit of a hike. But they did not let bikes or scooters through the gate. They do have the purple route shuttle that goes through HBC. But I think you'd have to get from camp Scholler to one of the purple route stops inside the gate. In terms of distance, I don't think it'd save much walking.

The wife and I have electric scooters to get from the camper to the gate. Last year it was over a mile one way.

I also used mine to get to the social on Waukau. I just told the robo cops I was going to the private house on the end.

I suppose one could use it to get to the gate on Galatin Ave. but sneaking under the gate in the daytime might be problematic.

There s 2 shortcuts through sleepy Hollow that will shorten the walk. One is through the woods eastward from the Camp Store and the other one is towards SoS bros.

Well the good news is that it sounds like I’m not the only Long-timer thinking of leaving the airplane at home - twenty years straight of worrying what the western will do for arrival or departure - or storms when I’m tied down. Twenty years of trying to make sure I get the airplane uncovered in the morning and covered in the evening with everything else I have going on…. And everyone is bored with the RV’s we bring anyway….

The bad news is that I don’t have a good answer for you except to bring an e-bike to get you from Schoeller as far as the party house using Forest Home (which is outside the gate - crosses in front of it) and then you have to slog it from there. But if you can get through the fence…. You’re almost there! The few times I can snag the corporate golf cart from the management, I use that route - but I can get through the Waukau gate and get inside to use the interior cart paths from the gate to HBC.

Or….call the Welcome Wagon for a ride! If you’re going to go so you spend hours at HBC, that’d work.

A bike is fine Dan.
Between the rows of tents are gravel roads, easy to pedal.
There’s a massive bike parking near the hangars, from there take the trams.

I parked at CS in 2019, carried my camping gear to HBC and camped next to a buddy. From where I was parked at CS close to the airport south boundary, it was a hike to HBC and I had everything on my back...which was screaming at me by the time I got to HBC. Yes there is a tram which stops in front of CS, but it doesn't come around very often and you can spend a lot of time waiting. It was not a premium experience and I can't recommend it, but it's the only game in town if you want to stay at the show and you didn't fly in. If I had to do it again, I would ship all my cr@p to the show, park my car in CS and camp with a friend again. One round trip to/from the car with nothing on my back.

2nd the Homebuilt Welcome Wagon. A great service free of charge (they take donations to keep it running.). Maybe volunteer a couple of shifts as a driver and meet all kinds of homebuilt folks. A few VAF guys are involved, Jerry, Todd, some others.

Other answers depend a lot on where exactly you are in Schiller. It’s large. Huge. Further away= easier to justify motorized transportation.

Last year I took my son to see a friend / CFI in the RV camping area (camper, not plane). We walked there, but he drove us to the Waukaw gate in his golf cart. He said he wasn't allowed past that area, but lots of golf carts where we were driving around.

Dan call the Welcome Wagon, that's our primary mission anyway...920-230-7906 typical hours are 7am-8PM starting on 7/17 what day do you arrive?

I camp in HBC with two young boys who are huge fans of camp Scholler pancakes. We tend to be opportunistic about our use of the wagons. ie we try to hitch rides rather than request them, and leave the requesting for folks in more need. 4 out of 5 breakfasts last year there was a wagon rolling up to pancakes on its way back to HBC with empty seats as we walked out.

As others have said, biking works well. We stay in a camper RV in Scholler and I have not found the roads or grass to be very difficult to ride on. One doesn't have to ride far on the grass (which can be very rough) to get to a gravel road usually. Best to camp midway between gravel, as a lot of dust comes from them. Make sure you have a cot, those grass fields can be rough. The buses run constantly from Scholler to just south of the exhibit hangars. Camping further out makes it less likely the buses will be full.
