It is with profound sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Angela W. Palmer, MD aka “Scrubs," during a recent gathering of formation flying friends held at St. George Regional Airport (SGU) in Utah. She was a dedicated neurosurgeon known for her exceptional skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence – both in medicine and in the cockpit. Scrubs was an experienced RV pilot and enthusiastic participant in the RV and FFI formation communities, with an unwavering focus on safety and camaraderie. She brought joy, expertise, and friendship to every gathering, inspiring those around her with her passion for aviation and her kind spirit.

Scrubs was the proud owner of a Vans RV-3 which she flew across the country on many occasions, and a RV-10, which enabled her to provide timely care to patients in many Nevada and Arizona communities. As a highly qualified airshow formation pilot, she had the opportunity to participate in several exceptional formation demonstrations, including the Vans 50th anniversary 50-ship over Oshkosh 2022.

On the morning of February 28, 2026, Scrubs joined with friends for a recreational formation flight, as she had hundreds of times before. During a portion of the flight called “extended trail” – where aircraft are separated from each other and following with intervals of 500-1000 feet – her aircraft was observed to maneuver abruptly, roll inverted and then impact the ground. Emergency services were immediately dispatched, but the crash was not survivable.

Our hearts go out to Scrubs’ husband and fellow formation pilot, Thomas Palmer aka "Vader," their family, friends, colleagues, and numerous patients who benefited from her life-saving work. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will determine the likely cause. We ask our aviation friends and communities to refrain from speculation or sensationalism, and to allow the formal processes to proceed unhindered.

In the handful of flights in which I got to lead Scrubs, or fly her wing, I consistently marveled at her graceful and precise maneuvering. Scrubs was one of my absolutely favorite pilots for formation flight. Being married to Tommy “Vader” Palmer, an FFI Check Pilot and esteemed leader in FFI, it was clear that Angela strove to uphold their shared high standard of formation excellence.

The world is a lesser place with Angela’s loss.

Tommy, Kelli and I wrap our arms around you in prayer. We love and miss her.

Thank you for posting this, Tim. Heard about it a few days ago. I hope the NTSB can find some insight, and pray for comfort for all of Angela’s family and friends.

Kindest (and please let us know if there is anything we can do),
Doug

I don't even have words that would come close to expressing the sadness I feel about this tragic event. I still can't get my head around it. I was just texting the two of them recently about getting together for some formation flying. I had the privilege and honor to train under the both of them. Angela was an AMAZING pilot!! She made it look effortless while the rest of us were working our butts off. Scrubs was truly one of the most talented people I've ever flown with - Military or Civilian. She will be truly missed. My heart goes out to Tommy and the entire RV family in Boulder City, Las Vegas and beyond.

Godspeed and fair winds, Scrubs!!

Clear skies and Godspeed Angela, my friend.

This is so terrible. I am so sorry to hear about your friend. We just held a moment of silence in honor of her.

RIP

I am so sorry to hear this! Scrubs helped a friend and I extensively on our rejoins at Pin Bluff last October. Then she led the last formation flight I was in on Saturday in Pine Bluff. She was such a wonderful teacher and was so nice to me! She and Vader will be in my prayers!

I am so sorry to hear this as well. I met Scrubs at Madera last year for my first FFI clinic. She did some briefings with me as I was a rookie. She was super nice and I admired her skill along wth everyone elses skill there. Her RV-3 was the coolest -3 I had ever seen with the glass panel. This is really terrible news..... :(

I’ll always remember her this way! Big smile and big heart. She was just the very best. There is a hole in the force today ….

While I know none of you I have to offer my prayers to those of you in the flight who saw or heard this accident as it unfolded. While you will never be the same please give yourselves some time to process the trauma you just witnessed. It's impossible to unfeel what you experienced but you can move forward with time.
