...getting it started.

Friday before the forecast winds got too high took a buddy back to his home airport around 20 miles away after he dropped off his RV-8 at Monk’s for an annual. Nothing to report except a bumpy ride <g>.

Saturday it was WINDY in N.TX. Got the other toy charged up, washed and checked over for the summer (purchased used 17 years ago). Took the long way home.

Sunday I’m in the sim, and the Wx above TX is brochure perfect:

So it was on Friday...
Just a beautiful "nowhere" flight burning Avgas locally.
50 happy minutes in the air. :D

Finished up a modified forward baggage floor that has an access panel to make it easy to check the brake fluid levels on the pedal mounted master cylinders in my 8

Finished up my condition inspection including a dynamic balance.

Went flying today for fuel, got smacked around by turbulence and even saw my first ash sigmet. Kept my eyes outside for a change in air quality but I didn't see anything. Cyrstal clear here.

Worland fuel prices............

I can see why you went somewhere else for fuel. What's up with Worland and their fuel prices? That used to be one of my favorite stops on the way to Columbus..... Not now....:eek::eek: $7.26????:mad::mad:

Been a pretty nice weekend of RV flying..

Yesterday, I took the RV over to Hemet (KHMT) for breakfast. Weather was alright; ceilings were high enough to safely fly there, but low enough to keep a lot of pilots on the ground. So that made for a pretty traffic free flight over there, and an empty pattern. After eating, I took advantage of the empty pattern and did a few stop & gos before heading back home.

Then today, I flew the RV up to Torrance (KTOA) to pick up dinner for us, and bring it home... but then a friend asked if I can pick up dinner from the same restaurant for her & her husband. So ended up picking up two full meals, and flying it home in the RV..

RV.. Restaurant delivery Vehicle??

Literally, I used less fuel flying to Torrance and back than I would have if I drove my car. Plus, I saved about three hours of driving!

Oh your telling me brother… to make it more ridiculous for ya, that 7.26 a gallon was just reduced this week from 7.44 a gallon!

I have never heard it out of their mouth but I’m pretty sure they just don’t want anything to do with GA and would probably rather not even sell the stuff. All their business is in helicopter fire fighting. Very very low number of people on the field buying from them… some of us have tried reasoning…

I recommend Hotsprings and South Bighorn for your travels next time. Hotsprings has the better FBO but usually worse winds. Maybe I’ll see ya there on one of my fuel runs. Haha :D

...
I laugh hard at your "high" fuel prices! :D

If my conversion to freedom units is correct, we're paying about $9.50/gallon for premium mogas, and about $13.50/gallon for avgas.

Visited the first 2023 RV fly-in in good ol Europe, taking place at LIKF, aka Aviodelta aviosuperficie, a 500m long grass strip of perfect quality in the vicinity of Parma.
A good dozen RVs attended, almost all of them Italians since the weather over the Alps was kinda challenging.

Italian hospitality at its best, thanks guys

Hung my prop

I removed my CS prop a few weeks ago for reseal, paint and IRAN - got prop back and installed this weekend. Other than prop being over greased (see pic), no issues. I used some nylon, door trim pry bars from HF & Coleman fuel to clean the sludge out of the crankshaft. I used the AntiSplat prop wrench for R&R - it worked great. (And I need to figure out how to rotate my posted pics…)

haha yep, all relative I suppose. It's more about the average though. Our FBO gives no benefits of going there and is around 25% higher than the average in the area. That's the frustration.

I do not envy your fuel prices though!!! lol

Lost Coast P2P run

The conditions aligned for running the 27 miles from Mattole Creek to Shelter Cove: Perfect tides, tail-wind, good weather, and saving a 5 hour car ride (EACH way) by flying!

Flew from KDVO (Gnoss) to K0Q5 (Shelter Cove) on Thursday. Parked on the north end and stayed in a great AirBnB within walking distance. Bonus was I could keep an eye on my plane from the place.

Friday morning, took a shuttle to Mattole with (10) people that were backpacking. Was off and running down the beach at 9:30AM. Absolutely gorgeous. But, this is a flying forum, so came across the (2) private (yes, one is debatable) airstrips at Miller Flat (Big Flat Creek). Pictures below. Looks good for the RV15.

Run was super fun. Restaurants were good and the fly back on Saturday morning was the usual fog ceiling for departure and arrival via RNAV 13 at Gnoss. Overall, a great trip!

Sport Aircraft Association Fly-In and AGM at Ashburton, South Island.

My first event with my own aircraft. Sadly the weather wasn't so good for those in the North Island and the number of aircraft from up that way was down as a result. On a positive note it gave me half a chance to take home the silver, since three-time winner of the Vans RV Cup - Kevin Paulsen - wasn't there. :D

Grand Champion was awarded to a deserving Superchamp owner - ZK-MMJ. A very nicely finished aircraft indeed.

And on Friday the model I had ordered way back in July finally arrived from the manufacturer in the Philippines. It will look good in my office.

Following is a selection of photos from the weekend. Hidden in there is a beautiful Waco that I regret not taking more photos of. I spent so much time admiring it and asking questions I forget to document it. ZK-AEL is the rego if you wanted to do an internet search for it.

Gots lots of practice safety wiring my prop. You see I’ll reinstalled my prop fresh from a TBO reseal. Unfortunately, after I got it back on, torqued, and safety wired I discovered that I forgot to install the new hub o-ring. So I had to undo all that work, pull the prop off, install the o-ring and reinstall it all over again.

Beautiful flight to Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande (“Big Island”) is just 20 minutes away from Rio in our RV’s. I wish the 7 had floats…

The fuel tank FINALLY resides back on the wing. Bolts 2 Z-Brackets went together better than expected, only had to use a drift punch twice to line things up. Skins lined up perfectly top and bottom, pretty amazing. Very satisfying couple hours.

Winds were screaming at the surface, no way to calibrate the sending unit with the airplane almost flying on the ground. Not worth manually pouring in a gallon at a time in the hangar.

Soon we’ll be airborne again…..

Fill, Sand repeat

Filled pin holes and surface blemishes, sand and repeat.

Then off to the paint booth with a couple more parts of the plane ready to take to the hanger for final assembly in a month.... I hope!

I got another 5 hours flown off of my FAA required 40. Figuring out the autopilot! Way cool!! I finally got some nice weather on my days off.

Flew my RV-7A for the First Time

After 16 years, a full time job and a project move from Amarillo Texas to Idaho Falls Idaho, N755RC flew for the first time on 4-16-2023.

Congrats, Richard! It's a great feeling! Take care, enjoy the test period, and check out the EAA test cards if you have not already.

PVF to UAO

Taking a nice RV-6A north for the new owner. The view was fantastic. Got shut down by weather north of Medford OR and ended up having to return and secure it there.

360 with fixed pitch Catto putting up some respectable numbers.

Got a chance to fly the RV Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Oh yea!

Thursday: Did two takeoffs and landings to just verify everything was still attached after my first oil/filter change, suction screen clean-out, fuel filter clean-out, and fuel drain valve clean-outs.

Friday: Slow flight testing from the test plan. 360 degree turns at 60kts, 55kts clean, 55kts 1/2 flaps, and 55kts full flaps. Learned that this activity really cooks the engine. Had to take breaks after every two turns in order to keep CHTs under 450.

Saturday: Flew over to KLVK to pick up a tool from the local EAA folks and to visit a few friends in the area. Had a scare when my starter failed to engage on the ramp at KLVK. Pulled the cowl and inspected/wiggled all the wiring. No clues. Tried again and the starter fired right up. Doesn't leave me very reassured. This needs further investigation.

Sunday: Uneventful flight home from KLVK. Had a nice tailwind. 183kt ground speed at 8.2GPH at the top of my descent, love this plane!

Finished up some "to-do" tasks after SnF, interrupted by a "gift" of Covid.
  • Replaced the quadrant with a "formation" quadrant.
  • Replaced the ADHRS mount with a beefier version. Was getting some torsional twisting. (I think. Seems to be resolved.)
  • Installed an Anti-Splat air-oil separator.
  • Reworked a weeping oil cooler fitting.
  • Dressed/secured the cabin heat SCAT a little better.
  • Repaired/repainted a damaged gear leg fairing. (Ian!)
  • Made another tweak to the snorkel where it was rubbing the cowl.
  • Changed the oil.
  • Washed off the SnF grime!
  • Got some "air" time on Sunday afternoon.

They are never really "done". I keep thinking I can put away the fiberglass supplies....nope...

Great to be able to enjoy so much flying - love it.

In respect to the starter issue (and it depends on which starter you have) - sometimes the starter motor will turn and the Bendix will not throw out and engage. Did the starter make any noise at all... or just silence? Did you hear any solenoids engage or try to engage?

Oh Man do I wish I was you......

Looks like you're almost there. I told a friend of mine it would be funny to have a video of me flying the plane for those 2 hours Sunday. It would be me constantly shaking my head and smiling in disbelief of what I was doing.

There are numerous discussion threads about SkyTec starter failures exactly like mine, so better to keep the discussion there. I currently suspect an impending case of infant mortality for the solenoid on the starter.

I've added my report here for the historic record.

Flew the -10 from KRHV in the Bay Area to Truckee (KTRK) and then from there to Mammoth Lakes (KMMH) and back for a tour of the High Sierras.

Formation flying is probably the most fun I’ve had in a small aeroplane - thanks for the great instruction.
