Paint bubbles on the starter

I’m trying to figure out if I have a starter problem or a paint problem. I have the T-bolt IO-390 and a pretty standard installation. I got the motor in 2018 and have been flying since April 2019.

Doing an oil change today and I noticed the paint on my starter is bubbling. Mostly around where the starter contacts the engine case, but also right on the front of the starter. The motor has 216 hours on it and I don’t recall seeing this before. There are no indications of excessive temperatures anywhere under the cowl.

My oil temps have been running a little low during the cold weather…certainly not high. Usually the temp indicates 180 exactly. I think the highest I have ever seen is about 195F. I have not had any issue with the operation of the starter.

Comments or ideas? Anyone else seen this?

I’ve noticed this exact thing on my O360 starter just this past week. It has the appearance of being really hot but it surely is not the case. I’m kind of relieved to see you have the same issue. Must be really low temp paint.
