External screws for access panels, etc

Hello all -

I just did my annual CI on my 10 and, as happens, a few counter sunk screws missing, a few screw heads stripped...that kind of thing.

I need to know what a good selection of access plate screws would be, along with those for the wheel pants (there are two diameters of screws on the pants).

I was going to order a set of various screws and washers, some countersunk some not, some short, some not...etc.

I could look at the plans from the builder and find these, but I was hoping for a quick solve.

Thanks,

Scott

I made this list a while ago. Covers all of the hardware on the outside. Some of it may be specific to my plane.

I think you can purchase a set of preview plans from Van and order the screws called out in the plan. Most of them will be in the size of #6 and #8 screws.

For access panel screws

I?d highly recommend McMaster Carr for any SS screws. Large selection, fast and reasonable $

A thousand coin envelopes are about $8 on Amazon. Put your screws in them as you go and write what they are for in the envelope. Saves screws but more importantly avoids FOD. I hate worrying about where in my plane a missing screw could be.

I’d recommend sticking to aircraft fasteners, they are completely different than the others mentioned above and for good reason. There are many substitutes for Stainless the cad, any old aircraft hardware book will have the call outs.

Screws

Don’t forget to use a good screwdriver. I see a lot of screws damaged by worn or cheap screwdrivers. Causes problems and takes time to deal with. Recommend using high quality replaceable bits and toss them at first sign of wear.

Don the best thing in my box is my #2 Wera Phillips screwdriver. Good point. Not sure what disposable tip is as good but let me know I’ll get a few.

Wera tips are good and I get them from Brown tool too. Good results can also be had with Dewalt tips from Lowe’s, the ones with the yellow band on the shank. I look at mine frequently with a mag glass and if the drive bars show any wear
they get tossed.

same question now in 2022

Has anyone ever found some torx screws in something apart from stainless? I’m in an extremely high corrosion environment so would rather a sacrificial screw like cad. 100 deg seems impossible to find. Also prefer something for structural attachments, mil rated.

Check out http://www.aaronssixlobescrews.com/

I decided to replace all Phillips on the plane. Not cheap, but well worth it IMO, especially for access panels.

Torx

McMaster has them. I am using some in non structural places.

SS torx from microfasteners is the way to go for access panels and anything non-structural especially in a corrosive environment. 8R8 100 degree torx for most access panels, wing tips, tail transition piece, wheel pants halves, etc.
