Visiting Ireland

The Shorts factory was in Belfast back in the day. Since then, they merged with Bombardier, and I don't know what, if any, manufacturing they are doing in Belfast today.

You could also find the site near Derry, Northern Ireland where Amelia Earhart landed her Vega upon completing the first solo cross-atlantic flight by a female.

Otherwise, enjoy looking at green pastures, rock walls, and sheep. ;-)

I exchanged email with the EAA chapter pres in Limerick a couple years back. There is at least one RV there, maybe more. They seem like a nice bunch, you may want to look them up.

June 15th marks the 100th anniversary of Alcock and Brown's first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. There should be a few events to mark the centenary.

There are a couple of memorials near the site of the 'landing' in Clifton, Co Galway.

If you visit the Aran Islands, you could buy a ticket for what is claimed to be the shortest airline commercial sector. Inishmor to Inishmaan is about 1 mile. The islands are well worth a visit anyway.

A couple of small museums that I know about are at Shannon and Foyne (Seaplanes).

Well what Ireland may lack in aviation interest is definitely made up for in the number of distilleries there.

If you will be around Shannon

If you like flying boats and will be in the area it is a good stop. It was like Chicago O'hare for a few years before airliners got wheels.

Also FWIW , the old port at Queenstown, (Now Cobh -pronounced Cove) was the last place the Titanic departed.

Flying Ireland Magazine has a GA section and if you dig for past issues articles there are lots of flyins and events during the summer months. Mid June is often some of the best VFR wx.

There are several RV's scattered around Ireland that often show up at the fly in events.

EI-EIO

There is an RV painted to resemble a Friesian cow with the wonderful registration mark EI-EIO.

They still are. Don’t be afraid of visiting the north, it’s quiet these days, if you are a GOT fan I can point you,to some filming locations

Ireland

I'm not so sure I'd go out of my way to find aviation stuff in Ireland, given the variety of truly exceptional cultural attractions available. Check out Newgrange, an ancient and intact stone structure older than the Pyramids, the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, Guinness Brewery, Jameson Distillery, the Book of Kells, on and on... Definitely have a pint in the Brazen Head pub in Dublin, the oldest continuously operated pub in the world (6th century) and spend the evening listening to traditional Irish music in O'Donohoe's pub off of Stephens Green. Have lunch at Malahide Castle, I grew up a 10min walk from there... PM me if you want the skinny on the local scene.

I spent several work weeks in Belfast right after "The Troubles" ended. Our hotel staff told us "The road in front of the hotel was the most bombed place in Belfast." Thanks a lot!

On my birthday that year, my friends took me to a bar in Belfast. I started looking around and there were all these hard arsed looking guys. I asked about it and was told "Oh, this is the bar the SAS guys go to."

I couldn't figure out if that was the safest or most dangerous place in town...

Must have been the Europa Hotel, and yes it was, plenty of glass to blow up.

It?s a LOT better these days, Brexit may change that
