Well, they may be lightening holes, or they may be lightning holes....but I doubt they are lighting holes, unless of course you plan to put lights behind them.

Always good to save weight ! I did that when I built mine also.

Yes, holes can weigh a bunch, and add up… from the wing ribs whilst building the -4, sometime last century…
