First time to Oshkosh with my 12

First time to Oshkosh with my 12 that I completed last year. Arrival was awesome and got some bling and a song from the HB register. Two up and close to gross weight. 8 hours from Charlotte with 2 fuel stops. Averaged about 110 kts ground speed with about a 10 kt headwind. No issues, what a great little plane!

That looks like a cool paint scheme! Mind sharing a pic or two of your plane? Wish I could’ve gone to osh. But I’ll be working on my wings for my 12iS 👍 Thanks - Jacob

Congrats! I hope to make it there one day. I would also like to see some pics of your plane. Good job!

All vinyl wrap! It looked pretty good too. I honestly didn't notice until I got up close to it and saw the rivets were "hidden". I'm publishing the yearly RV-12 paint schemes at Oshkosh video tomorrow. Though unfortunately, there weren't too many -12s on the field this year

Agreed! We need to all park together next time! I only saw a handful of 12’s while I was there. Mine was in HBC but i had her completely covered in Bruces covers.
Ive used the 3M 2080 vinyl on the LE of my wings and HS and it’s performed very well. Ive also used it on high touch areas of the cockpit and its holding up. If it ever starts to tear or winkle, i just peel it off, clean the surface and reapply. Really great stuff.

Way to go, Jeff! What was your typical cruise rpm, fuel burn and true airspeed during the trip?

Thanks,

Mark, I kept the RPM at the bottom of the yellow band (52-5400 depending on climb/descent etc.)

Fuel burn averaged about 4.5 an hour. I had a good 10-15 kt headwind and hit about 110 its GS on the way in and 130 Its+ GS on the way back in spots with a tail wind. *No wheel pants yet.

Were you here for the storm that blew through? Your rudder skin appears to have picked up a slight wrinkle. Looks to be similar to what's been reported in this thread. https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?t=206128

Yep! I got a wrinkle from that insane storm. I'm going to put a new skin on it and the doubler that came out after my rudder was already done. Flying home you'd never know that the wrinkle was there. No flight issues whatsoever.

Happened to me too. It was $162 ($76 parts, $76 shipping, $10 tax) for R-01211 Stub Spar (the new part), R-01201-1 Rudder Skin (with pre-punched holes for the stub-spar), and 200 LP4-3 rivets.

I salvaged the skeleton by carefully drilling off the pop-rivet heads. Whole job took about 3 hours. If I remember, I needed the long 12" #30 drill bit to match-drill a couple holes in 2 ribs for that sub spar.

stub spar

good morning. I'm anew builder who started with an old tail kit. would you please direct me to the information about the R-01211 stub spar? I need to make sure that my plane is up to date.

thanks,
John

Well Jeff, now that you have that thing flying all over, why have you not ventured to Unity to let me see that vinyl job?

Take a look at this thread: https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?t=206128

Post #22 contains a picture that shows where the stub spar is located. If installed, there will be a vertical line of rivets in this location.

If I were building now, I would wrap entire airplane in 3M vinyl. I used 1080 silver to cover polished aluminum on turtle deck and vert stab. Easy to do with excellent result.

Has same appearance as gel-coat fiberglass….

What about moisture around the rivets?
It seems that there are some room around the rivets where the vinyl isn't covering.
Condensation? Corrosion?
