carb air box / nose gear interference

I have a 7A with a O-360-A1D. The nose gear leg fairing rides on the underside of the carb air box. We heated up the box and put a dent in it to accommodate the gear leg, but though the gear leg has adequate clearance, the fairing "free floats" at its upper end and rubs on the box. So far this is a cosmetic issue--just some paint worn off, but has anyone found a better solution?

Trim the fairing so it does go up that far. The NG leg fairing really only needs to get up to the level of the bottom of the lower cowl.
And the NG leg fairing is supposed to have a hose clamp retaining it at the bottom... not free floating.
