I suppose I’ll get it started and attempt the new and better pic hosting!

Finished the oil change and under cowling lube and look-see just in time to pick up my lil’ dude after school. Back to the airport to toss our bags in the RV and pop some clouds for an hour on the way to the lake. I hope he never loses his enthusiasm for flying with dad.
Lots of varying layers made for a scenic and interesting flight!

Baird to Terre Haute

Baird the German Short Haired Pointer needed to get to Chicago. I took him from Muscle Shoals, AL (KMSL) to Terre Haute, IN (3I3).
As you can see from the photo, I carefully briefed Baird before the flight.

Andy,

Looks like you passed the pic hosting challenge.

Nice performance! 160 KTAS at 7.2 GPH = 25.55 statute mpg at 184 mph.

Changed the oil and took a short flight

One of the cadets and I were testing the range of a low power transmitter by driving around town, and we wound up close to the airport. I asked if he likes to fly, and of course, he said yes. So he helped me change the oil (who knew that was fun), and after we took a short flight before the weather rolled in. PXL_20210521_161110684.MP.jpg

Practiced landings.

Lately they haven't been the greasers that I like. I wasn't managing that last foot very well.

When this happens I know that some bad habit has crept in. So I stayed in the pattern yesterday and shot 6 landings. Last 3 were greasers.

Also the wind shifted and the pattern was busy so I got to change runways mid-pattern and ATC kept calling for long downwinds and changing left traffic to right and back to left, searching for numbers 1,2 and sometimes 3 who are landing first. This was actually very good because most of my approaches are straight-in approaches.

I also chose to go around once as I was doing a touch and go, and the plane ahead of me was coming to a full stop. I judged that ATC placed us a little too closely together so that was good practice too.

Went out with a photographer

Friday afternoon we went out with a photographer for a quick shoot out of Heritage Field. Ken was the photographer and he just sent this to me. Had a great day flying with Mike for this photo op.

Rudder Trim

I bench-tested the components for electric trim on my RV-8A's rudder. The two aluminum parts on the right form a bridle (I think that's what it's called) that captures the right rudder cable just forward of the spar. The red/black wires are connected to a DPDT center-off polarity reversing switch.

Still to do: mount actuator's clevis to the forward baggage compartment wall (near the right rudder pedal) and find a console location to mount the switch. And remove my fixed rudder trim tab.

I've been making things pretty in and around my aft avionics shelf.

All bundles finalized, adel clamps temporarily attached:

Harness branches going forward (under the right armrest) and aft (for the ADAHRS and tail stuff):

Testing final fit with the adels screwed in and the baggage well in place:

Making nice tidy wire bundles sure is satisfying.

CVH Fun

Flew down to Hollister California and met some friends for lunch. Great restaurant right off the airport. We were fortunate to watch a P-51 Mustang and L39 take off. Another fun day in the RV!

Debugged a tach problem, changed out various worn fasteners to proper aircraft-grade replacements.

And washed her. So pretty when she's clean. :)

Now chasing oil leak.

Cincy to Philly

Used the RV12 for 427nm trip to visit sick father in Philly a couple days. Perfect weather and smooth air.

The plane is just out of the paint shop, but needs to go down for its first condition inspection. In addition to the standard checklist, I'm doing a full W&B baseline measurement to pick up the from the paint and the various minor Phase 1 puts and takes.

I used the Flyboys' RV Jack Points for the first time to get the plane on the scales ... they worked perfectly with an el-cheapo auto scissors jack (borrowed from the aviation compartment of my Camry)

Joe, how about some details of the install? I'd like to know if it works.

Andy,

David, yes finally attempted and learned the new pic hosting.

After I landed I realized I forgot to hook up my oil door/cowl flap servo, if I could’ve closed the door it would’ve been 162 KTAS and 25.89 statue mpg at 186.426MPH not that I’m counting......😁

Access panels

Installed the Vans forward access panels kit in my -7 in preparation for swapping out the GTX 327, GDL 82, and GDL 39, for a GNX 375 (on order with Stein).
Played with the Garmin 375 simulator.

Finished the condition inspection -- an amazing amount of trivial details -- organized the hangar and stuff for a Monday morning departure to Longview, TX to demonstrate the Expanded Envelope Exercises® to LeTourneau University. The modern C172 we flew in was less responsive than I remember my old straight-tail C175.

The last leg of the flight, watching the ADS-B weather, was very little stick and rudder with the autopilot flying, but a whole lot of ADM. Changed destination twice within the last hour, air filed IFR that got me a total of 30 seconds IMC in three separate encounters, but was so much easier than dodging clouds.

Wednesday or so, head out towards Las Vegas to visit my nephew.
