Wheels and brakes

Wheels and brakes for me.
Talk about skimpy plans. Even the picture in the plans is not complete. I guess they got tired of drawing by the time they got to the wheels and brakes….

Gear On!

TripleTree

After Petit Jean last week, Butch & I flew up to TripleTree for lunch on Friday. For those that havent visited, u really have to land your RV there. Smooth as a golf course green. 7,000 feet.

KOZW- KSQL- KOZW

Completed a long x-country flight out to California and back, VFR. Had some weather delays, but no issues with the plane. Great views and a very capable aircraft. Glad I made the trip.

Day trip for Comair reunion

Quick out and back to attend the 10th annual Comair reunion picnic at Hidden Valley Lake just outside of Cincinnati. Got to visit with many folks that I worked with over the 23 years I flew for the airline. Double bonus, got to do a flyover on my way into I67 and get my night landings in on the return home.

Now the hard work begins...

With some heavy duty commitment from the team we managed to get the last of the 40 hour Phase 1 testing completed on my RV-6 during Saturday morning - 6 weeks after she first flew. With Avgas sitting at an average of $3.60/litre the last fuel invoice was eye-watering but its done, so now for the 100 hour inspection and the mountain of paperwork associated with the Test Report.

Its been a blast, so I celebrated with some aero's over Lake Dunstan.

A huge thanks to Sam Chartres for his help getting through the Phase 1 and especially for volunteering to do the spins (read - drew the short straw). :D In my defence I WAS present for the spins at MAUW. Why? Well... why not?

Getting it started.

v/r,dr

I flew my RV-10 over to the Southwest Ohio Regional Fly In (SWORFI). It was held at the Winemiller Farm near Blanchester, Ohio. It was a hoot:). Probably the smoothest grass strip I've ever landed on. Got to see a few older aircraft, a gyrocopter, or two, and a few really nice RV's. The lunch spread was awesome also.

Fritz's first flight

Fritz the bernidoodle got his first taste of flying.
The flight crew: Oldest son (pilot) and daughter acting as flight attendant to a single four legged passenger.
I think it was an all around success. Flying from Concord to Auburn for lunch in a nice outdoor setting.
I have been relegated to right side co pilot, maintenance man, fuel filler upper and photographer and I don't mind at all.

Montague Balloon Fest!

I flew over from Ashland to Montague in the pre-dawn to see the dawn ascension of balloons at the Montague Balloon Fest. There were eight balloons including the Smokey-the-Bear balloon from the US Forest service (great public outreach!)

(oh darn, preview software showed both images right side up, even though the second one was portrait. Doug's site doesn't allow attachment editing after posting. any moderators able to rotate the image?)

First time I've taken off in the dark in a long time. My main worry was whether there were any deer on the runway. I back-taxied about half the runway and didn't see any. Montague is just about a 15-minute hop over the Siskiyou pass. Got to Montague in time to tie down in the static display area at the airport and walk over the hill to the balloon launch site.

After that, I was around the airport for the static display. My RV-8 and the s/n 24-03 HP-24 glider were both on display, joined by a Stinson, an Ercoupe, a C-172, and a J-3.

We also gave 10 glider rides. Was a pretty fun day.

On Saturday “ArlingtonRV” and I flew our two RV-8s down to the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM) in Hood River, OR. The museum is adjacent to the airport and an easy walk from the south ramp. I try to fly down once or twice a year to visit it. It’s a great museum, and they regularly fly many of their aircraft and drive their cars, and host an annual fly-in. And they are planning on expanding again to accommodate their growing collection.

On Saturday they had their last Ford Model T Driving School of the year. There must have been 5 or 6 Model Ts driving around the grounds with students (learners?) at the controls. The sessions will start up again in the Spring.

Link to some pics (and one video of a Model T with a student aboard) —> https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-sVrkXH/

The upper portion of Mt. Rainier on the way down:

The Sunrise Visitor Center on the east side of Mt. Rainier was quite busy:

The west face of Mt. Adams (it looks a lot prettier in the Winter when it is covered in snow):

100 hour/yearly condition inspection

Having fun with the CI - so far found some loose nuts on the gear, slightly offset alternator (2mm), good-looking photos from my new Ralcam borescope, good compressions all around, easy oil change and a bit of carbon with the K&P oil filter.

First trip to Triple Tree and my first long XC and camping in my RV-4 ;)
Good presence of various RV's.

Best sight - Ercoupe leading a 4 ship formation (diamond) with an RV-4 in trail (not mine).

Sacramento to LA day trip

Flew the RV-6A from Sacramento area to Los Angeles area for a day trip to visit the granddaughter (and daughter). 3.5 hours door to door for ~$300 ($7/gal gas out here) vs. 5 hours if I had to fly commercial. So much more fun...and gorgeous views. We are lucky folks to be able to experience these fantastic machines!

Unfortunately I busted the Bravo traversing northeast of BUR toward FUL. Flying VFR under the LAX shelf is very challenging in that area. ASRA report filed, lesson definitely learned. I was dropped by ATC to VFR by then so no phone number to call, but I fully expect a letter. Study your charts carefully!
