Not getting much flying in this year, I took advantage of a beautiful summer Saturday morning and flew 25 minutes west to the Rocky Mountain House Fly In Breakfast. Return trip included a fuel (ouch) stop and I finished with 1.5 on the Hobbs.

June is my maintenance month and this was my first flight after repairing my filtered air box/alternate air door and replacing the air filter which was in very bad shape. I also had installed new brake pads and an Antisplat Aero Easy Exit Bar, but those didn't affect the flying. I was also fully faired up for the first time in a while. Aircraft performance was much better than I've been seeing lately with 4-6 kts faster cruise on 1/2 gal/hr less fuel burn. Getting closer to book performance that I've always been well short of. Also started and ran better than usual. I suspect the air intake was well compromised.

The picture attached was taken as I was waiting for a backtrack out of CYRM with a couple of RV-7As behind me. In all 4 RV-7As showed up along with my -9A.

Actually last week

Taking a break from the RV this weekend but got a lot of flying in last week.
Flew from Jacksonville FL to Dallas (52F) on Monday morning. Installed my new GTN 750 Xi in the afternoon.
I did a test flight and fuel run from 52F to Bridgeport on Tuesday and prepped the plane for the return flight.
Wednesday flew back from 52F to Jax.
Thursday my wife and I flew from Jax to St. Pete, FL to visit with friends and Friday AM we flew back to Jax.
Nine plus hours in the air for the week. Filed and flew IFR on all the legs.

Tomorrow I’ll do an oil change :)

Trip to Aurora

Two of us flew from Vernon BC down to Van's and back again on Friday to pick up an order. Here's a shot of my friend Steve's RV9A by Mount Adams on the way back.

Condition inspection #8. Why I’m doing it in June in Florida is beyond me.

"ArlingtonRV" and I flew our RV-8s to Tillamook for lunch on Saturday. Since Erickson moved it aircraft collection from the WWII blimp hangar at Tillamook to its new facility at Madras several years ago, the Tillamook Air Museum isn't quite what it used to be.

Pic I took of "ArlingtonRV" on the way to Tillamook, with Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams in the background:

But I cringed when I saw my fuel bill of $172.97 after the flight ($7.640/Gal). Oh how I long for the $100 hamburger runs of old!

If you consider Friday afternoon as weekend, I went out for IFR lesson in my -10 with CFII. Pretty productive.

I ran down from KOLM to Tillamook to visit an old friend who I haven't seen for years. I love how a 3.5hr drive was reduced to a 45 minute flight! The flight down in the am was perfect in nice cool air, the return was a bit bumpy but the view couldn't be beat!

Gorgeous cooler morning, took off with a 3 knt tailwind and sliced through the buttery smooth air. On my way up through 7000 to catch a 20 knt tailwind there was a loud “POP” that immediately had me running through my emergency flow. Everything seemed normal and then I smelled it…..

Too much fog....

The NorCal summer fog season is upon us; I had to leave my sweet ride in the hangar and fly as GIB with Pat in his 7 to a CAF fly-in lunch in Modesto. Needed and IFR clearance both out and in to HAF to get through the thin marine layer that really didn't ever want to go away all day.

Grrr! It's time for that instrument ticket. The plane is able and ready; it just needs a competent pilot.

And, it's sure a lot easer departing the Bay Area on an IFR flight plan, rather than running under, around, and through all the cracks in the SFO Bravo. Buzzing along at 7k makes everything easy!

Seaside Municipal Airport Day

Sunday was the Seaside Municipal Airport Fly-In / Airport Appreciation day - a great day here on the coast! Highlight was 5 RVs from the local formation group.

Conducted aft CG tests. Loaded two 22 lb. water jugs in aft baggage, wedged in place with empty Aircraft Spruce box. Loaded three 50 lb. sandbags (triple bagged) into passenger seat and strapped down. Flew from PTK to 77G; performed arrival and departure stalls enroute with benign results. Bought ten gallons 100LL at 77G to offset PTK price increases, then flew home. RV-8s always fly nice wherever the CG is (in the envelope), but they are nicer to land with an aft CG (of course you knew that). 11 hours left on Phase 1 and good weather in the forecast. One more oil/filter change, a bit more flying, a few more tests and I'll be free... or expensive... whatever.

Back in the air for the first time in a month. An AF Herc pilot friend and I enjoyed some formation flying on a perfect morning over Lake Tahoe. He was almost at max power and I was pulled back to about 2100 - makes you realize just how efficient these machines are. Great fun and practice!

Andy - that whole airplane inverted shot needs some work, but this is a good start!

Completed Flight Review and flew to the South Carolina Breakfast Club on Sunday. After my flight review, I learned that I have a 50% chance of being able to use my airplane again after and engine out landing. I need more practice with engine out landings. Figures that something I do not practice a lot is what needs more practice.
