A productive week in Daytona followed by Scairport in La Porte

It was a busy week in the time machine starting out with a trip to Daytona last Sunday. Caught a great tailwind at 15,000 to my stretch stop in Anderson, SC and then continue to KDAB for a total flight time of 4.6 from KPPO. Top ground speed was 223 Kts on 6.6 gph.

Attended the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University College of Aviation's Industry Advisory Board meeting and set out for home Tuesday afternoon on the back side of the same monster high pressure system. Spent the night in London (KY) enjoying some great BBQ before heading home Wednesday morning.

The icing on the cake for the busy week was our local "Scairport" trick-or-treat event yesterday. Over 450 kids came out and enjoyed a fun time at the local field.
An amazing week of flying and being with the next generation of aviators.

Pilots N Paws

My father and I flew our first Pilots N Paws mission from Waukesha, WI to Flying Cloud, MN. It was a quick flight with a nice tailwind. The dog was a 70 pound doberman mix named Link and was very well behaved!

On the way back we checked off a few airports for the Wisconsin passport program.

A 30 minute flight sure beats a 2+ hour drive to watch my oldest daughter in the regional XC meet, their girls team took 1st!
No car at the airport and ironically 3.2 miles to the golf course where the meet was located. About 8 miles of exercise for me and 2 instrument approach’s, the last unexpectedly at minimums.

Not my RV, but an RV...

Flew American Airlines to DFW and then took Uber to Mineral Wells to pick up an RV-9A and took it to Ormond Beach the next morning.

I was fortunate that I was able to get out of MWL in good VFR weather. As I made my way east, there was a broken to overcast several thousand feet below me. Finally, around Monroe LA the layer cleared up and it was good VFR the rest of the way to Florida.

My first leg was MWL - M23.. Newton, Mississippi. An airport with not much (any when I was there, actually) activity, just west of Meridian MS. The fuel was cheap ($3.80/gallon), and they had a lounge area that was clean with two computers and a printer. Also a nice bathroom, also very clean..

After refueling and eating a sandwich I had bought the night before, I headed east to Ormond Beach. Nice flight there, with good weather, and a bit of a tailwind.

Overall, a really fun weekend of flying around.

High overcast across the SE Sunday evening, so it was eerie smooth at any altitude. Sunset peeked through at the last. The photo doesn't do it justice, and strangely enough, the "magenta line" was an extended left downwind for 9 at 08A, as if drawn by God himself.

Good light show at the hangar too.

looks good. a recent study indicates regular exercise will reduce your biological age by 9 yrs and protect you from cancer and other illnesses. regular exercise can keep you flying for a long time and makes food taste really good.

Unmasking a Stahr!

This past weekend I unmasked my RV-7 John Stahr paint job.

John and I worked 10 long days to go from a raw RV-7 to the latest Stahr masterpiece!

Before John came up here I built a 12' x 24' temporary paint booth in my hangar for about $700, including lighting.

More photos will be posted after final assembly.

"RV, Intrepid, southbound, 1100...."

The Ace Copilot and I flew from W96 (New Kent International Aerodrome, Quinton VA) to KISP (Long Island MacArthur) on Friday. What a good reason to get an instrument rating.....

We then came down the Hudson VFR corridor on the way back yesterday. I've done this a few times but it never ever gets old. HIGHLY recommended and stunningly easy to do.

Lots of traffic buzzing around. Glad I asked Vic Syracuse to add a flasher circuit to my landing & taxi lights when he was spelunking behind my instrument panel a few months back. :)

Yours is better than mine! Wow, that's my new screensaver.

Mine too! :)

By the way, this was taken while I was returning home from dropping off a friend at a different airport. He's a Major in the Airforce, and an active F35 Instructor Pilot. He just ordered his RV8 tail kit a couple of months ago, so this was a good flight where we went out and poked at the edges of the envelope. He thoroughly enjoyed himself and I don't think he's having any second thoughts about ordering the kit now.

Mallard's Landing Fly In

We had a nice flyover by a few members of the nearby Falcon RV Squadron.

All 4 RV's that visited were really nice. The lead aircraft had a beautiful paint scheme - no surprise the design and execution came from Jonathan McCormick at Plane Schemers/Evoke Aviation.

Hard to beat a west coast sunset but found a nice one Saturday in the Shenandoah “mountains”.

...
That guy is a legend! So talented. I really enjoy looking at his creations. One of the fun things to do at Oshkosh is to identify work he's done. He has a unique style which I really like.

Not only is he talented, he is an absolute blast to work with. He brings so much energy and enthusiasm to the job every day.

Even when we ran into minor problems John tackled them in stride and never, and I mean NEVER, had a negative attitude.

I certainly hope he will paint my next RV!
