What did you do with your RV this weekend? (10/1-2/2022)

...getting it started.

I had the distinct pleasure and honor to fly on Rob 'Smokey' Ray's wing on his 65th birthday (Oct 1). Randy and I joined up on him (in his Bonanza) for a beautiful morning's flight over to KXBP for fuel. After fueling he brought us over to his home field for a flyover and then we headed back to our field.

A morning around 70*F and 00000kt. Hard to beat.

WX was really nice in N.TX and the RVs were out (this grab 1100 local):

Honor Flight

The honor was mine…
:)

Kudos to DR and Randy for being brave enough to formate off an airplane older than me!

Same “old” story

Happy Birthday Smokey! It seems like you were in a wrong type of aircraft :D

Yeah, story of my life…my wife says it’s the RV10 aspirations on an RV4 budget!
Thanks Vlad!

Instrument practice! Trying to get my skills back after too many hours of full automation and autopilot.

Not that this is a big deal, but to get the avionics to display the needles for an LPV approach, the Flight Director is enabled. Hadn't realized that before, don't think that is documented.

Leaving KSAV, Clearance Delivery was self-confused. I said I wanted a GPS approach at KLHW, and they asked me which approach. Hmm. Before takeoff, how do I know what conditions will be at the destination airport?

ADS-B had no METAR to uplink, and the ATIS at destination was from when the tower went off the air the night before. (Tower was closed when I got there). That warrants an ASRS report.

Coming back to Savannah, I requested the GPS approach if they could work me in. Approach said they had my request, then ignored me for ten minutes till I asked them what the plan was. They then told me to expect vectors to final for the GPS approach.

Once on the approach, they asked for maximum forward speed. (Turns out I was in front of an AirBus). The air was bumpy but not too bumpy, and I gave them 160 knots to a three mile final. Even with a maximum effort slip, I wasn't able to take the first turnoff.

Interestingly enough, after the slip, and maintaining a forward slip over the runway, I was overcontrolling slightly in pitch. I quit worrying about the deceleration and then got a nice landing, if farther down the runway.

Flew the wife and twins to see her sister in Virginia, run a 1/2 marathon and eat seafood.
2nd pic for Pete…..

One of the rare times I flew on Friday and Saturday. Friday was a recon run to check a location for a video shoot.

Saturday I did a test flight to check out a new camera mounting location. Wasn't happy with the result, but did get some nice views captured with the cell phone.

Went around the patch celebrating Smokey's BD. Not everyday a grown man reaches 65. Figured out why Green River turns red. Tons of clay are moving from the badlands through the canyons.

I had some spectacular views dodging thunderstorms on my way to Bozeman. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of the circular rainbow.

Pumpkins

Had to time a local flight to make it to a pumpkin carving event. We had the requisite airplane in the group as well as an homage to the mothership.

Passed a little milestone

Friday and Saturday my RV9 carried a passenger for the first time. Both are good friends and neither one was scared! They're even willing to go up again.
Sorry no cool pictures but it was a big moment for me.

161kts TAS on 6.6gph - those are some great numbers!

My FF has always fluctuated below 8.5ish GPH, I believe that leg was closer to 7 GPH. Could’ve easily got the 6.6 or less by going a little higher but my passengers or the stiffer headwinds up high kept me lower.

Grandma offered to watch the kids so my beautiful wife and I snuck away for a quick trip up to our favorite getaway: Duluth, MN. Had to wait a little later than we wanted for the morning overcast to burn off but it ended up a beautiful day. The colors weren't quite peak yet, but still beautiful! And keeping with the theme of the weekend I had to sneak a picture of the sleeping wife in too!

Uncle Willie Bob's Classic Car Show and Fly In

Helped revive an old pre Houston Airshow tradition this last weekend with the car show and fly in at the home field. Wolfe used to host some epic flying and parties back in the 80s and 90s. Trying to do our part to get back in that groove. Local RV owners provided rides and fly over demonstrations. Hope the link works...

Bryan, that is an excellent idea, and looks like a lot of fun! We need more people on our team to help keep airports open around the world. This is why I love skydiving - it's more people to help support flying. We need to find a way to get people who have different "unique" hobbies to support each other when their hobby is under threat by people who don't understand. Great stuff!

Exactly. We have a couple of very hostile neighbors. Threats, police reports, etc. So engaging with the local neighbors was a big part of this event. And, cars are a very big thing in Houston. Connecting the cars and planes was perfect.

Thinking we'd be glad to get 30, 40 maybe 50 cars if lucky and 200 people. By the end of the day, I counted 87 official car registrations and the food was wiped out way early. And we almost filled the airplane parking. 12-13 locally based planes plus 8-10 fly ins, including a commercial helicopter operator giving rides.

Marketing from Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo helped, but most heard by word of mouth.

We'll definitely do it again next year. And maybe try for a spring and fall event. Bonus having a fly in at home, literally, instead of having to fly somewhere.
