What did you do with your RV this weekend? (5/28-29/2022)

Along with some friends, we took the RV-8 and and RV-6 from Wiltshire in the south west UK, to Glenforsa Airfield in Scotland for their fly-in on Saturday. 700nm round trip not big by US standards, but it's covering a lot of ground here!

Chicago lakeshore

20220528_211634.jpgTook advantage of the beautiful weather last night to cruise the Chicago lakeshore with my bride. Shout out to Paul McVitty at Flyleds...upgrading my lights was instrumental to safely flying (landing) this wonderful bird at night.

Stopped at the fuel pumps yesterday at my home airport to top off after a short lunch flight with a buddy in our RV-8s, and found another whopping price increase putting the price of 100LL at $7.640/gallon.

Those that are building or buying should not underestimate the cost of operating their new RV. And the replacements for 100LL will probably be more expensive.

Fontana Dam, NC water release

The flood gates release water from the bottom of the dam where it goes up a ramp about 100 feet up and 400 feet out.

Yesterday, I flew (at altitude) a set of low speed spirals with different control inputs, then took the recorded flight data, messed with it to make it look like they were flown at low altitude at Oshkosh, played them through CloudAhoy and recorded the video for presentation at the Pilot Proficiency Center Monday and Friday afternoons at AirVenture.

This was actually the second time I flew a data collection flight. If I were to do it a third time, I could make lots of things simpler, but hey! it's done and really conveys how hazardous low speed spirals can be.

Come check it out at the Pilot Proficiency Center.

UT/WY state line got couple inches of snow. Good for water business.

Pilots and Paws run

We flew down to Hereford Texas today to pick up a momma dog and 8 puppies. They were small, so we managed to stick them all in the back of the 6A. Here I am loading the momma.

Here is Sabrina handing up one of the puppies. They were significantly cute!

The pilots and paws folks do great work. The momma and puppies seemed to travel well, and are getting used to the altitude in Colorado. It is a fun way to spend a day flying, and do a little good in the world.

Working on panel labeling. Shot flat black base coat, added dry transfer labeling on top, then topped it off with two-part clear for protection. Then reinstalled everything to get some beauty shots. I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Joined the 200kt club

Finally got a good tailwind, 29 kts, to get me into the 200 kt winner's circle on a milk run today. And, bonus content: spotted Scott Chastain's "Descending Dove" on the Hollister, CA ramp. I thought that plane looked familiar, after reading all his great posts over the years. Thanks again, Scott.

Looks great Philip! Can I ask how or where you had the dry transfers done?

I've had a couple PMs asking about the labels too, so I'll just go ahead and replicate my blurb here. The labels are custom printed, and I very closely followed the procedure laid out in this thread. That includes using the recommended vendor (https://imagetransfers.com/) and going with the four-stage paint process (primer/base/single part clear/two-part clear).

There are other dry-transfer vendors out there, some of which come in a good bit cheaper than the folks I used, but I stuck with Luann due to the recommendation. I'm glad I did, too; the label document I sent her was derived from a Photoshop file I'd been using to pan my panel, and the resulting file quality was not usable for printing. Luann asked me to send her my original PSD, and proceeded to recreate the text file for me - at no extra charge. I'm very happy with the service.

A little excitement at KLVK?--Coast air at KMYF

So, the wife had a convention in San Diego this long weekend. Flew down Friday (LVK (SF Bay Area) to MYF(San Diego)), uneventful. Returned today. About halfway home, wife notes on her iPad an email message: KMYF found an aircraft wheel on the runway we departed from, thinks it might be ours! Approaching LVK, Livermore tower has also already been contacted by KMYF, asks our plans. So I ask for a flyby so the tower can look at our landing gear. Tower asks, what if one's missing? I reply, "Well, call the Fire Department and we'll land on 25R". (There's a 2 truck fire station on the field). As we approach for the low approach, tower is shooing other aircraft away, saying they have "an emergency in progress". (Plane shows no tendency to yaw or other indication of missing wheel). After low approach, tower says it appears we have 3 wheels. We go around, come back and land uneventfully (one of my better soft field landings, IMHO). As we turn off, I count 12 - two groups of six - fire trucks, all with red lights flashing!! I guess a slow day for the fire department. But, better safe than sorry.
BTW, the relatively new FBO "Coast Air" at KMYF (Montgomery) gave us top rate service at a very competitive price. (rental car waiting, full service gas for two cents more than self-service, free coffee/cookies, no ramp fee). Made us feel like we had come in on a jet.

Coast is a good FBO. Since it wasn’t yours, I wonder whose wheel it was?

Heard the tower ask about your “missing” tire, Bob. They diverted me to 25L. Landed before your fly-by and was sent all the way down to arrival end of 25R and hold short. Nice landing…very courteous of you, asking Ground if they’d call MYF to inform them it wasn’t your FOD in the runway! :D

You have four of our Single Spots replacing the wingtip halogens, correct?

I had a college friend out in Texas for a wedding. So I flew down from Dallas to San Antonio on Saturday. From there we flew over to Fredericksburg for lunch and then I dropped him back at BAZ before heading back north. Was hot and bumpy, but overall a good time.

I went to Charleston. Because I felt the need, the need....to see a Tomcat.
I also had to dodge some fun weather.

My wife and I flew to Dublin, Texas (9FO). It's very small and out of the way, but we enjoy these small towns. The airport is a bit rundown but acceptable and they have a courtesy car. We drove to a great little shop called Vledhuizen Cheese. Stuart, the owner saw us pull up and asked if we flew in. I admitted we had an asked him how he knew and he said he recognized the courtesy car as he is also a pilot. He flies a Beechcraft Debonair out of Dublin. Nice guy to talk to you if you get a chance.

We watched my oldest run state track at the start of the holiday weekend, I avoided most of the crowds by working Sun/Mon.
My poor RV hasn’t had the oil stirred or battery charged in 4 weeks since our twins were born 4 weeks ago. Time for a Boys’ trip and Beau to earn his wings.
Not that I actually convinced the wife, but she knew it was inevitable……
I packed lil’ Dude and Beau “Chilly” (he’s the chillest lil’ guy ever) and shortly after we kicked the tires and lit the fires for our guys trip to the lake.
About an hour flight and Chill as Ice the whole time, he slept the first 40 min and was happy in the back the last 20 min. Glad he’s not grading my landings yet…..
Sorry about the photo orientation, just have the iPhone at the moment

That’s correct Paul,

The two single-spots in each wingtip (4 total) provides enough lumens to see like an owl at night!

Thanks again for the product and support.

Headed South

The Ace Copilot and I journeyed to Savannah for a very fun impromptu weekend in that (absolutely awesome) city. The weekend discount on gas at Signature was certainly welcome given the, uh, slightly expensive per-gallon price. Luckily the RV is a bit more efficient than all those Gulfstreams sitting around down there. :)
