G900X ADSB IN/OUT?

Hey everyone, I have a Garmin G900X that has ADBS out but not in. When I fly near an airport it picks up traffic but when I'm flying around it doesn't. Anyone know what's needed for ADSB IN so I can get traffic all the time?

Thanks

I’m guessing you really don’t have adsb-in. You do have a mode S transponder, probably, that can pick up TIS (traffic information service) when in the right kind of coverage. The FAA is phasing this out so it’s not surprising if you only get it near a major airport where it still exists.
Since your header says you’re in San Diego, you do know that adsb-out is required within 30nm of KSAN? Or above 10,000’? Also, there are some circumstances where you will not get traffic info without ADSB-out?
To answer your specific question: to get ADSB-in, and display it on your G900 screen, you need an adsb-in receiver from Garmin, or another manufacturer that can interface with the 900. Since Garmin keeps the required software proprietary the latter is hard to find.

My apologies, meant to say I have ADSB out, not in. I just spoke with someone at Garmin, they said I need a GDL88. Cost about $4,200. There has to be cheaper solution for this?

ADSB out with G-900X

If you have ADSB out you must have had the transponder box updated to an extended squitter which provides ADSB out information. It still can receive TIS information as mentioned above, but the transponder can’t receive ADSB in information. For that you need the expensive GDL -88 box installed. I don’t know of any non-Garmin systems that will display ADSB in on the panel. I have the same G-900X panel and just use Foreflight Sentry on the IPad for “in” information.

+1. Agreed, Garmin’s accessory prices are high, but $4K is way off the wall. Also agree, there are a number of $500 adsb-in receivers that will communicate wirelessly to an iPad or iPad mini running Foreflight and/or WingX. Not as convenient as having the data on your PFD. I.e., I use a (bought used, refurbished) Skyradar D2, connects via USB to my GRT Hx PFD, and simultaneously via wifi to my iPad mini running WingX. Since it’s on my PFD I rarely use the iPad.

Yeah I have a Sentry I use and i'll prob just stick with that for now. Was hoping there was some easy/cheap fix. Thanks for all the help

FYI, The GDL 88 will do out (UAT) and "in" on the screen. You don't need anything else.
