What to do in AZ?

Turns out I am traveling through AZ (Ryan field by Tucson) and have nothing to do tomorrow. Any cool place I should fly to and visit tomorrow for a day trip?

Thx

Oliver

Sedona, hike some or all of the airport loop trail, eat at airport restaurant (nicer than typical $100 hamburger), rent a car by the hour

Payson, good $100 restaurant on the field

Ajo (P01), walk about a mile to the golf course and have lunch. Be sure to understand MOA and restricted areas.

Grapevine, nothing there. Beautiful. https://azpilots.org/pilot-info/backcountry-airstrips

Friday lunch flight to Yuma for BBQ ribs at Millionaire

Regards,

I think I have a plan.

Leave Ryan and head to Chandler to join the EAA meeting then head up to Sedona for lunch and stop over in Grapevine on the way back to Ryan... .

2 hours in the air and should keep me busy for the day.

Thx!

Oliver

FYI the EAA Chapter 81 meeting at Ryan is 10am tomorrow in case your plans change and you get out much later.

More details about BBQ and Ajo

I had a PM asking about BBQ at Yuma. See post #5 of https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?p=1245875 They were still (or again?) doing Friday BBQ as of a few weeks ago. Suggest calling ahead to reserve an order - if you can get them to answer the phone: 928-276-9200

For more info about Ajo see:https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?t=170425, and as Vlad learned, it's best to call ahead to verify the resturant is open. 520-387-5011

Fun things to do in AZ

As a related question, does anyone know of any AZ airport restaurants that are open for dinner? Looking to take my wife for a dinner/sunset flight while the weather is good in AZ. Most airport restaurants are only breakfast/lunch.

Thanks, Mike

A fun place to fly into is the Wayside Inn. A real slice of Americana. It is dirt and not technically a runway, but half a dozen airplanes are usually parked there. Great diner if you're in to greasy spoon types.

Mesa Grill at the Sedona Airport is open for dinner (also breakfast and lunch). Hours are on their website (https://mesagrillsedona.com).

You will need a reservation for dinner.

Had a great day!

Day started with EAA chapter meeting at Ryan learning something about 3d printing. Then I headed to Sedona for lunch which was definitely better then the average airport burger. Only problem was that they seated me at the bar and I had to watch him poor beer without me getting one :D .

My favorite part though was going to Grapevine. I think I will go back there to camp for a couple of days some time.

Ajo looks very tempting too but I run out of time. I goes will try on my next AZ trip.

Thanks for all the tips!

Oliver

You don’t understand. I hate taking pictures so that’s as good as it gets.

On another note I will pick up my son in Salt Lake from college end of May. Any place interesting I should stop in your new neighborhood?
