Oil Quick Drain Pug

Anybody using the SAF Air Oil Quick Drain Plug in their 390? This looks like a great convenience, but I have seen some reviews that indicate they leak soon after installation. Any opinions? Also, the Spruce catalog does not list the 390 as one of the compatible engines, but does list many of the 360's.

Off your topic but I like the Fumoto brand. It is brass and made for high energy attachments. Go to their website and look for a table of the configurations, make your selection, then browser search for that part number.

Yes, but never again. The rubber seal inside fails and they leak/drip. Get one that has a ball-type valve(EZ Drain or Fumoto) or perhaps better yet, a ValvoMax.

So, for under $5 for mil-spec parts, from Aircraft Spruce, you can replace the o-rings. (DO NOT use ones from your nearest big box home repair store!) Unless the o-ring gasket seat in the aluminum valve body is damaged this will fix the problem.

The Saf Air quick oil drain valve is essentially the same design (spring loaded valve using o-rings to seal) as the SAF Air fuel tank drain valves most of us use in RVs (Saf Air CAV-110). The fuel drain valve uses only 1 small o-ring to keep all 40ish gallons of fuel from leaking out. Short of getting a piece of debris between the o-ring and o-ring seating surface, or the o-ring getting damaged, or simply getting too old and hard to seal....these work pretty well.

BTW, any ball valve or other type valve used as an oil drain valve will have o-rings or other types of rubber seals inside it. Seals that are just as likely to get worn out or damaged....and cause a leak.

Availability model answers are on your post from yesterday , last on page two page 2. I have Saf, no leaks in 6 yrs. Nothing is perfect.

Plug the Outlet?

I suppose if leakage was an issue, the nipple could be plugged until oil change was performed. That would, at least, keep leaking oil from accumulating on the lower cowl.

Fumoto's are great!

I lost count of how many Fumoto valves Ive bought and installed. They make the highest quality and most economical oil drain valves!

I used the P5000 version for my -14A (that's what others I knew were using in the -14(A)s). https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/safOilDrainValves_07-00879.php

No problems so far in ~2yrs.
