VAF Hat Sighting - St Maarten

Visiting Sunset Bar & Grill in St Maarten. The day prior to my visit, a 747 departed resulting in 30 people blown into the water with 2 injured requiring a hospital. It's amazing how the average person doesn't understand the thrust and power behind a jet that size! Some of the jets coming in would only clear the fence by 10 feet, it was pretty incredible to see.

Cool! I was there just last week and saw much the same thing. In fact, I saw about 8 people blown completely off their feet, across the beach, and into the water (along with camera bags, umbrellas, towels, etc) by a DC-9. A guy from my cruise ship broke his collar bone by standing dead center behind the airplane like an idiot and got blown into the water.

Unfortunately I forgot my VAF hat as I wanted to do the "hat sighting" pic too.

If interested, there's good sized group of RV's based at ZPH. If you're ever up our way, stop by. Saturday is always good to see most of them. Shoot me a PM before hand if you ever get the chance to come up.

Me landing on the same runway:

After landing I went to the beach and saw a guy taking pictures. I bought him a beer as payment for emailing my photo later that week.

An a heavier one

Well this one could be me

We are limited when the runway is wet. Not too much for landing but for take-off.
With a wet runway, the direct flight to Paris is most of the time not possible and we has to make a fuel stop at Pointe ? Pitre.

March trip

Ok, we go every year. This year we are going March 11-18. Seems like a popular destination.
Here's a plan for the whole year. Every Wednesday, meet at the sunset bar at noon. Wear your Vans Airforce hat. Or walk around showing people the hole your drilled in your finger....you'll find another rv'er sooner or later.

Well, the boat (Celebrity Solstice) gets in at 10 AM next Weds. Assuming I'm not over-ruled by my wife, I'll try and get to the bar by noon. It will probably be a VAF hat, although it might be a Van's hat instead.:)

I don't know if you recognized my wife in the pic by the surfboard. She is a A320 Capt. at JFK Jet Blue ( Cammie Denton )

.....

and Carl I will have to take you up on it soon.

Hey Rich,

I didn't, but I recognize her now. Never had the privilege to fly with her when I was in the right seat.

Did you guys have the JB party planned at sun n fun last year?

I spend a week every November in an ocean front room in the hotel in the background. Very reasonable pre-season rates from JFK. My wife has tried to get a hotel on the French side but I refuse to move. Nothing like sitting on the porch with a cold beverage watching airplanes take off and land. The "Jumbo" Air France (is it a 777?) and KLM 747 are truly sites to behold as they barely clear the fence on arrival. Of course take off is amazing too.

St. Martin (spelled St. Marten on the Dutch side) is a great destination with beautiful beaches, casinos, good food and GREAT deals on watches in Phillipsburgh. You cannot beat the prices.

Oh, one more minor detail. The majority of females store their bathing suit tops in their beach bag within minutes of arriving at the beach.:cool:

The "Jumbo" Air France is an Airbus A340.
Only direct flight to Europe (if and only the runway is dry)

we did not have a get together last year after the storm !!!!! my camper was damaged and the camp site was under water....so you didn't miss anything....

Cammie and I are still trying to decide about sun and fun this year. Sun and fun and I are having some issues right now. I run the volunteer kitchen for the event and they have decided to move the kitchen and don't have any camp spots with power and water for us..... So I will let you know !!!! I won't be there for 15 days without power and water......
