Early arriver questions from a first-time HBC user

For those who get to HBC before Sunday:

How soon are the camping amenities (bathrooms, showers, etc) available?
When does the camp store open?
Are there food vendors set up yet?

I won’t arrive until Sunday but curious since so many people get there even earlier. Please save me a spot!!

We arrived yesterday. Showers and bathrooms are open at the homebuilt camping pavilion and coffee is up in the morning :) Don’t know about the camp store.

An hour or so ago I walked around the show areas north of the square and a couple of A&W food places were open.

HTH

90 today and tomorrow, a little humid but not too bad. Supposed to cool way down after some weather goes through tomorrow evening.

Bring your good gust locks and tie downs…

Or GREEN DOT camera is very good.

Has ADSB overlay on it.

Listening to the tower feed today and the green dot webcam.
When you hear the whole cab of spotters collectively go "whoa!", you know that ain't good!
A taildragger did a "tailspin" (controller-speak) on 18 (90deg'ish x-wind). I think it was a C185. Some RV was next and they sent him to 27.
C185 said they were okay.

I think the takeaway is that if you're not comfortable with a crosswind, and the other runway is available, don't be shy about requesting it. (lest ye end up on the blooper reel)

No 15 yet, hot and sticky and excitement building

Couple of hours before possible storms hit - getting things ready.

Very grateful that the plane didn’t get beat up. A few hundred feet away there was some damage to some planes. Not RVs.

About as bad as the cell we had this past year down at Sun n Fun. Just a /little bit more/ than a gentle breeze.

Oh no......

And so far I've counted five A-model rudders with holes in them. There will be more.

We took a drive this evening from our rental house out Omro Road ( about five miles northwest of KOSH), through Oshkosh and down along the lake to Penells (for perch!), looking for an open restaurant. Lots and lots of power outages, and a fair number of (old) trees down in yards, a few tipped over port-a-potties at construction sites.

That’s the in-town report - fairly typical minor damage, but wonder how long the power will be out - most grocery stores on the north side or out!

Paul

That was a crazy storm with lots of wind and rain. Lots of tents and shade canopies destroyed and many reports of failed gust locks with rudders and horizontal stabs banging violently. I hope there is not too much damage.

The grounds don’t seem saturated, big trailers are coming into camp right now. Usually takes a few storms to get the ruts started in Camp Scholler.

At the University, it was dark enough that I thought the sun had already set.

Bought a Big Screw kit from Greg this morning, and I was pretty much assured my 6.9 wouldn’t bulge. Still worried about some other flying aircraft, or tent, or grandma and the kids, landing on my baby…
All good for now, till next one… ones gonna fly past pretty close at around 4am…

Good nite everyone here, see ya on the flight line tomorrow :)

Oh no......

And so far I've counted five A-model rudders with holes in them. There will be more.

There are more, I don’t think I counted the same 5 as you.

There is also another interesting failure mode I have noticed on at least 3 A models with the riveted trailing edge and I think all of them have the “gust lock” type with the angle Al going between the rudder horn and the cable attach point.

It appears that the lock was able to hold the bottom straight, but the wind was able to still bend the rudder, leaving the metal bent right above the light/fiberglass portion. They are all almost bent the exact same way, and several are “delaminated” on the lower edge, either popping the rivets there, or cracking the epoxy.

The gust lock did however prevent the rudder from slamming into the elevator like some of the others, leaving dents and holes, so that is some consolation. The one near me, if you move the rudder by hand, it hits the rudder horn and still has 3+ inches to go to hit the elevator, but the wind did that and more, leaving a good sized hole.

I hate to see it on these peoples pride and joy, it’s a terrible feeling trying to hold your own tent up while you hear your neighbors plane getting smashed. :(

Winds gusting to 50 kts as the storm rolled through:

And I'm pretty sure those two jets were parked parallel to the others prior to the storm:

…..we’ll have fun he said. ;^)

Flew my friend’s new RV8 (“Red Tail”) with him in it and along with another RV friend from KCUB. Flight was okay except for the haze we had to climb above AND the Chicago area wealther that did not move as fast and the weather shown above that moved FASTER than expected.

Coming from the east coast, had to go more west than Madison, WI and then head north. We were on the very leading edge (Green on weather screens) of this weather and “Arrival” started telling everyone that was inbound to bypass the extended arrival, find someone to follow and go straight to RIPON in an effort to beat the storm.

We were already approaching VPGRN so no shortcut for us. We landed, rushed to tie-down the plane in the midst of an evacuation notice AND to find that we could NOT find on of our tie-down rings!!!! HOLY SMOKES Batman.

Fortunately Rian and the Team at Vans were able to find a “spare” and we got the “new” plane tied down.

Caught a bus to Gruenhagen (dorms). Was about to sprinkle as we were getting on the bus. By the time we got to Gruenhagen, there were road signs that had been blown into the road and the rain water was so deep that I had to take off my shoes and roll up my pant legs to get out of the bus!

Significant power outages downtown (Roxy’s) and at the dorms (Kelly’s).

Hopefully no planes got major damage and tomorrow brings a better day.

ANd oh,

Almost banged up my friend’s new plane on landing (18).

Turning base, I lost sight of my friend ahead of me.
He later confirmed that we ending up with the wind shifting to more of a tailwind,

BUT, the kicker was that I got distracted by a high wing plane taking off heading toward me on my “no later than the tower” base turn. TOWER: “High wing, what are you doing? Where are you going???!”

Runway overshoot. Gentle correction. Getting low and slow but not fully lined up. About to fall out of the sky. Add throttle and the 215 ponies had her “leap” back upwards. Now high and correcting. Over the runway, ease her down and misjudge height. THUMP! Onto the runway with the owner in back experiencing to all.

Be careful out there. Fly your plane and don’t let the distractions get you down!!

When things get rushed, take your time. BE SAFE!

Saturday evening July 23

At a Festival grocery store around 10 PM with some of the Van’s gang. Power was off and they were on emergency generator so you couldn’t buy anything that was refrigerated. Bought some breakfast stuff and back to the house. Strange vibe, no lights in the parking lot. I’ve seen some zombie movies start like this…

No crowds at least…

Maybe Vans need to bring a few 6/77/8/9 rudder kits to Osh every year. I am sure one could find someone with the skill to put a new rudder together during the show.

The “pin the horn” or the “padded clamps” on the counterweight type stops always fail.

Here is the simple and very strong way to go.

Carl where does that attach to on the horiz?

The rope is looped around the middle elevator journal bearings - using a Bowline knot so you can easily untie it. Once done the elevators are held in the full up position using the pilot seat belt around the stick - this prevents the rope from rubbing against the bottom of the elevator. This also provides for the aileron stop function.

The rudder tailing edge fixture is made from 1”x1”x1/8” angle, cut down into a triangle on each side with a rope hole. The apex of the angle gets a rubber lining along with a piece of foam rubber.

Use a nice piece of 3/6” or so nylon rope - never a bungee cord.
Carl

Here’s the “ on-the-field-storm’s-a-comin’ “ version, but apparently applied too late.

Airport closure

The airport was closed several times today creating more aircraft in the air waiting to land.

I was playing with setting on my camera and lens trying to perfect settings (mostly shutter speed) to get great airplane photos. (airplane in focus and prop blurred)

I watched (what look like an L-19) land on runway 36R and have it's left wing go up and do a ground loop off the runway. I unfortunately did not have presence of mind to press the shutter button to capture it till after the airplane came to a stop and emergency crews arrived.

Screen Shot 2022-07-24 at 8.39.28 PM.png

Another closure was reported to have occurred shortly there after when a tailwheel RV exited the runway into the grass and nosed over but this closure did not last long. I had already walked away from the runway area when this occurred.

Help us walk the RV-15 prototype to the booth at 10 AM Monday

(Greg H) Come help us walk the RV-15 prototype airplane into the booth at AirVenture! We'll gather at the booth and everyone will get a chance to see it in person. The RV-15 will arrive at the Van's booth - number 604 in the homebuilt exhibit area - on Monday morning at about 10am!

(Doug) if there are any changes to the time I will post a note in the RV 15 sub forum and in this thread.

Very exciting!

See you Monday!

Gary,
I read your report and my mind translated it to L-39 from L-19. My friend was flying his L-39 over today or tomorrow and I freaked out! Sorry for the L-39 but glad it wasnt my friend!!

Just you wait...

If you think the RVs are popular now, just wait until the RV15, RV15A (and RV16, RV16A) start replacing all the Cessna 170, 172's, 180, 185s...
