...getting it started.

Greg Hughes was in my neck of the woods for a few hours over the weekend, so we met and had some laughs with fellow knuckleheads Jay Pratt, Carol and Steve. I could let you in on the amazing, RV-related future projects we were mapping out, but I'd have to kill ya*.

*Actually just lunch, but nobody will believe that <g>. The one item on the bullet list was in fact accomplished: eat. :):D

Lighted Sign Box

FINALLY finished my lighted sign box from Van's. I think it took me longer to finish this project than it did to finish my RV10!! :) Makes a great addition to my office credenza.

I stared longingly at the absolutely gorgeous blue sky in Arizona...wish the plane were here! But, the flying weather at home (in MN) has been miserable the past month, so I'm probably not missing too much!

Did my first x-country in my RV to bring it over to my local airport from where I built it. Used the flight to continue breaking in the engine and explore the prop control and get a feel for how the aircraft responds to leaning in cruise.

Took the RV6 up for a ride. Here is that "absolutely gorgeous blue sky in Arizona" that Alex refers to in post #4. The downside - OAT was 25 degrees at wheels up and I was wishing I had put the cabin heat muff pack in last October when doing the CI.

Saturday BREAKFAST and LUNCH adventure

Accounting for time zone (CT to ET), had to depart 8A1 just before dawn (civil twilight) to get to Carrollton GA (KCTJ) for EAA breakfast. Their chapter is getting back in the breakfast business. They served up an excellent spread and was regaled with stories from the Old Guard.
Then in loose formation with my CFI buddy in his RV12, we slipped under ATL Class B to Peach State Aerodrome for lunch.
What an interesting place with a nice restaurant.
But the story on the previous owner & developer (Ron Alexander) was sadly sobering.
Shows you what a chain of events can produce in the blink of an eye.

I also transported a pup today, my first. A little challenging to load and unload but she seemed happy once we had her situated.

It’s a plane!

N742US became a plane yesterday. Continuing with my TW training, then transition training. Hope to get her off the ground in the next couple of months.

Carb first flight

First flight after converting from an Ellison to a 4SPA. The airbox, some FWF fuel plumbing and control cables had to change. EGTs and CHTs looked good, and it ran well. I have a few test cards to fly off, and a POH revision to complete afterwards. It was good to fly again.

Finally flew my first flight after overhaul. Everything but the PC680 battery worked great. It needed a jump but everything else ran perfect.

I flew from Bankstown YSBK to Goolwa YGWA near Adelaide, South Australia.

25 knot headwind all theway, 4.8h flying time. Lunch at Tocumwal.

The trip is for the aircraft's annual.

The plane is virtually squawk-free, right up until the trip for the annual, when it starts doing this: https://youtube.com/shorts/oow84jVyJhU?feature=share

EGT#1 and fuel flow fluctuating.

Mag check seems fine, so it must be fuel or air, so I have my A&P looking at the injector nozzle or maybe induction leaks. It probably isn't induction, because that seems more like a fault that's built-in than one that develops without provocation, so I'm going to guess there's a bit of debris swirling around somewhere making the #1 injector partially block.

I was going to do a GAMI-sweep on the way over, but figured that'd be a waste of time while this was happening. Having said that, engine's running smooth and CHTs are fine, so it's also the kind of fault that could be present for years without anyone knowing about it in the absence of an engine monitor.

Hard Eight! First time there last week while in the big D during training. Great experience!

Completed transition training in my 7a this weekend

Did 5 hours of transition training at KDVO with a great CFI over there who also has an RV. Excited to start my new RV life!

Skyscraper and I flew to Phoenix to pickup a buddy and his wife for a weekend in Monterey. On the ride home I took off at the edge of an overcast layer near El Paso with low ceilings that stretched all the way to Pensacola. I chose VFR on top so I would not get vectored around the many MOAs I would need to fly through in order to maintain a straight shot to Florida and maintain fuel reserves. Descending through the 20-30 degree F clouds is not something that I wanted to do for a fuel stop so I planned on landing beyond the cloud deck. I've never seen a cloud deck with low ceilings that stretched over 1,000 miles like this before. While VFR on top I did not see a single plane except the B-52s that flew circles around me in Louisiana. They don't look fast sitting on the ground but man those things can move. They made Skyscraper feel like it was sitting still.

Probe issue -- either with the probe itself, or the terminations/connections.

I considered that, but discounted it because FF was fluctuating too.

It might come to that, anyway. Will talk to my A&P later today.

A buddy and I flew down to Daytona on Friday for the Rolex 24, then flew back in absolutely miserable MVFR on Sunday. A good time was had by all, but the flight back was miserable.

One of the highlights on the way down happened just outside of a MOA in South Georgia. An F-22 passed directly in front of us on a 90 degree cross heading at our altitude. Another was about 5 miles in trail and passed right over us after climbing a thousand feet or so. I did a very smooth uphill half of a lazy 8 to keep him in sight as he passed overhead.

If you're someone who's gone to the Rolex 24 over the years, it has grown up a LOT from my first visits 35ish years ago. Much more crowded, much harder to get in the pits, etc. Still a good time, but a lot more people than I'm used to...

Flew the wife from Cromwell to Taiere and back again in the RV-6, a 70 nm trip each way and an easy 1.1 hours for the morning despite taking a slightly scenic route. Sitting at 6,500 feet over the Maniototo westbound I felt pretty chuffed when she said - "This aircraft is so smooth... its just so nice to fly in." Yup. Happy wife and all that. :)

People think of NZ as all green and mountainous. It is... except where its brown and flat and largely featureless. :D

New RV-4 pilot in the club!

This weekend, we flew two RVs down to Apply Valley, and flew back as a three ship! One of the passengers is hooked, he’s on the lookout for his own also!!

One legged miner gets in my RV-4

There’s a guy who bought 4 old mines in Tecopa California.. over 20 miles of trails, down to 1100 feet below the surface. I met him and gave him a plane ride over his property, along with a little formation flight with a RV-8 and a Thorp.

Saturday I flew up to Cable Airport KCCB in Upland, CA with my son to attend my nieces Baby Shower. My wife and daughters drove up on Friday night, but I had A&P class until late Friday night. So much nicer to fly 35 minutes instead of a 2-3 hour slog through LA traffic. Perfect weather day. We got back in the early afternoon, so I dropped the cowl and drained the oil. Came back to the hangar this morning and got new oil added and a new filter installed. Thankfully, I have an oil filter, but I had procured an alternative last year just in case. Here is a side by side comparison of the Tempest AA48110 vs. a Napa Gold 1515. The Napa filter is just a bit longer, requires a separate nipple adapter, and something like a hose clamp to safety wire the filter. I'll stick to the tried and true Tempest, but will keep the Napa filter on deck if needed.
