Crankcase Plug

As others have said, it depends on where they are located. There is one on some engines near the front that is used for constant speed props and I have seen one below cylinder #3 that has been used as an oil return line for a wet vacuum pump. Over the years that Lycoming has been making engines, there have been differences depending on the year of manufacture.
 
Inverted oil systems will use one of the sump ports for your return when upside down, or is it for supply, errr, I need to study my Christen manual!
