Antenna location

In my new-to-me -7A, there are a couple of antennas positioned above the glareshield. One is for a Garmin 696, one for the uAvionix echoUAT GPS, and one for the 696 XM receiver. It's kind of cluttered and unsightly. I've seen photos where folks mounted them on a shelf forward of the firewall. That seems simple enough and solves the clutter problem. Any downsides to this approach? Although it gets them out of the direct sun, it does put them in the hot engine area. Is that a problem? Thanks for your advice!

You’re going to get two kinds of replies:
1. I did it, it works fine!
2. This is the worst possible location for solid state electronics (most of these antennas have amplifiers in them) which hate heat.
I’m a #2 person.
Oh, almost forgot, #3: XM doesn’t work when I’m headed north (the satellite is south, and blocked by the metal firewall).
