Cockpit Computer with e-sectionals

In the past I used Falconview(FV), the Air Force flight planning program released for public use, primarily for flight planning, and to digitize turn point lat long data for input to a personal program that generates time, distance, heading and fuel data for my kneepad. I like FV because it?s free, works on XP and Windows7, has an online support group and is self contained ? I don?t have to connect to the internet to plan (phone or internet for wx). With the advent of free current sectional and terminal charts from the FAA, I decided to try and use FV inflight with GPS input. After experimenting for several months, I finally came up with a cockpit set up that works to my satisfaction for my RV4. The configuration is a Lenovo ideapad s10-3t tablet computer with Windows7, on a Ram mount and with a Globalsat bu353 GPS for NMEA input. Rather than the touchpad, a wireless mouse on my knee is used for inputs to FV. The mouse works reasonably well, even in moderate turbulence ? my fat finger doesn?t. The tablet stows above the glove box when not in use. The following pictures show the layout:

Any tablet PC with Windows7 should run FV, and I believe two CPU machines will be available soon. You can see the bu353 usb connection and the tablet power connection wires above the mount in the GloveBoxMount picture. I had originally tried to use the cockpit GPS196 for NMEA input to the tablet and FV, since a computer connection to the GPS196 is necessary when updating the database, but the serial to usb cable is intermittent and unsatisfactory, even when using the Garmin specific cable. The bu353 is the same size as a remote GPS antenna, automatically turns on and off with the tablet, and was half the price of the Garmin cable. Now I have two independent sources of GPS information in the cockpit, the GPS196 and the FV display on the tablet.

Thanks for the review feetwet,
It is so cool what you can do with all the electronic toys you can get these days.
I have found Ebay very good with prices for UMPC that run windows7 / winCE etc. You can get 10" touch units from China for around $200.
I just wish CASA ( Australia ) would release maps for free like the FAA :(
