What did you do with your RV this weekend? (12/10-11/2022)

Flew up to LA (Cable airport in Upland) to visit family. Watched the Army-Navy football game with my father-in-law (he is former Army). Clouds were starting to move in, but we got in and out with no issues.

Just a touch of snow on Mt. Baldy. More coming later tonight.

Approaches, Approaches. Approaches

Still working on the instrument rating, one RNAV GPS on autopilot absolutely on rails, two hand flown ILS/LOC absolutely not on rails

GNX375 and the Gemini A/P work well together once you figure out the procedures.

Getting there :)

It's so cool to see those mountains again! I recognized it immediately when glancing through the photos. I did all my primary and instrument training at Cable, used to be a dispatcher for the flight school, drove the fuel truck, etc. Now I'm in Virginia, and I so miss having mountains.

Totally agree Kenneth. I lived at the bottom of Mt Baldy for 30 years. Always knew where home was. One of the few things I miss about CA. And In-N-Out of course.

Refreshing some Approaches

Took the RV for 2 hand flown approaches, LNAV then ILS, and the 3rd one autopilot flew the RNAV.
Nice sunset as well.

Didn't quite make the weekend, but today I managed to get back in the air after nearly 6 months of no flying. I had a rotator cuff repair done at the beginning of July and when I was ready to return my plane wasn't. All of that is squared away now and this afternoon I went up in the cold smooth air and put my pilot's hat back on. I'm a 500 hour pilot, all in the past 8 years, I think that recency helped with the rust but that's a long break to return from. Both the plane and I performed well and I managed 4/4 good landings. I certainly need practice and will be doing as much flying in the next few weeks as I can before resuming my IFR training.

I made a quick trip up to Steamboat (KSBS) on Sunday for lunch and to grab a few things I accidentally left at my condo last week. I keep a Sequoia up there so I don’t have to lean on the FBO for a courtesy car all the time, but it was completely buried in snow AND the battery was completely dead, so I ended up using the airport’s loaner vehicle anyway.

Next time I’m up there, I’ll come armed with better winter clothing, a jump start box, and more time. I’ll also need to change my habits so that I’ll visit the airport and dig the Sequoia out whenever I drive up there so that it’s available and ready whenever I can fly up. If anyone ever needs a vehicle when visiting KSBS, let me know and we can probably make it happen, btw. It doesn’t get used enough!

In any case, here are a few pics from the adventure. I usually go west at 14,500 and eastbound at 13,500. I really like my O2D2 oxygen system from Mountain High.
