Securing Wire Bundles - Avionics Bay

HFS

Well Known Member
This "tip" is more for those building instead of those already built.

When building the fuselage, more particularly the avionics bay area, I drill holes in the perimeter longerons, and add strips with holes in them wherever else I need them for future "tying off" wire bundles in the future.

If I am concerned about weakening the structure, I reinforce that area before drilling the holes. I have these holes sized for the smallest cable tie being considered - usually less than .110".

This little bit of effort on the front end, pays dividends years later when doing the wiring.

YMMV - and probably will.

Adhesive Bonded Brackets

May I suggest using bonded brackets on Critical Structure (Canopy Sill Longeron). Open Holes are crack initiation sites. The smaller the hole diameter, the worse the stress riser. Honestly, those open holes should be plugged to prevent the open hole from flexing as load flows through the
longeron.
