Monkworkz MZ-30L on an Inverted Oil RV-7

Greetings,

I helped a friend install a Monkworkz generator for backup power on an RV-7 with inverted oil. The inverted vacuum pad adapter works great, we had to adjust the "clocking" of the elbow fitting but otherwise the installation was straightforward.

We used adel clamps on opposite corners to mount the regulator on the engine mount. The regulator case is CNC'd 6061 aluminum and plenty stiff enough to just use two of the mounting holes. The factory holes are for #6 screws but adel clamps are made for AN4/#10 so we drilled out the mounting holes to 3/16" and used MS nuts on the top side with no washers so that the nut did not interfere with the circuit board.

We ran one three conductor shielded wire back to the cockpit for the enable switch, output active and analog current output. Shielding is not strictly necessary but having everything in one wire makes pulling the wire much easier.

We were also able to get the regulator status(Active Output pin) and the current output(Analog Current Output pin) to show up on the Skyview system.

The regulator status was set up to be a contact input and is displayed as a red/green radio button type output on the Skyview.

The current from the generator was set up to display on the screen in the same way as the shunt based current meter.

Here are some more pictures of the installation.

In backup mode we were able to pull the field breaker for the belt driven alternator and see the bus voltage drop momentarily and then rise back up to 14.2V(the regulator output voltage when configured for a backup installation).

Pushing the field breaker back in brought the belt driven alternator back on line, made the backup current go to zero and made the output active go from Green to Yellow to Red. 2.5 lbs and 30 amps of power ready to go.
