Nose wheel rolling resistance

Just repacked all bearing on my 6A, nose wheel just doesn’t seem right… if axle bolt is tightened enough to prevent aluminum spacers from turning the tire/wheel turns but you cannot spin it a full rotation… if the axle bolt is loosened enough to get free tire movement, the spacers also turn against the yoke. I certainly don’t remember this issue from my nose gear leg rebuild or the last bunch of hours… any ideas?

The best solution is to send your wheels in to Allan at Antisplat and do the wheels bearing mod. Best thing i have done. No more repacking, no rolling resistance on the wheels.. well worth the money...

Matco nose wheel axel

The new design axle that is now standard uses a solid spacer instead and is available from Vans or Aircraft Spruce. That is what I am fitting on mine.

Been running one of these on my 6A for just over 1000 hrs. If you are running the original Matco wheel/bearing assembly, this axel allows setting the bearing preload separately from the bolt torque. Without it, I could not torque the bolt any amount that allowed the wheel any free spin, and kept the adapters from spinning in the bearings.

Well worth the “upgrade” at the time I purchased it. FYI, the axel is also available directly from Matco. http://www.matcomfg.com/AXLEASSEMBLYA27075INCH-idv-3857-1.html

Grove and Beringer both have tubeless nose wheel assemblies available which allows you to ditch the POS tubes.
