Garmin G3X Day/Night VFR Panel - RV-9A

Exciting progress in the shop last night, got the panel mounted and most of the harnesses secured. Still a lot to complete before I can really turn the system on, but the back up battery at least let me turn the screens on to play for a little while.

A few pictures of the panel, installation of the remote components on the sub panel, and the harnesses:

Mounting of the remote boxes on the sub panel. Nothing will be out of reach for future servicing:

Chris, I'm interested in the left side of your panel. I cant quite see the keyed switch that you used, What is that? Also, what switch are you using for your ignition testing? Where did you find those? Thanks. T

Happy RV9 owner leaves with this new panel :D

Walt,
Beautiful panel. The Aft Engine Control bracket (push pull throttle, prop, mixture) does not look like the F-746 supplied with the kit. Did you just round the corners, or is this an aftermarket part?
Thanks

Here's a closer look.

Hey Doc,

The key switch I believe to be a simple SPST that only serves to enable the master switch. Not much for security, mostly just to prevent an accident if someone without any knowledge decided to jump in and start pressing buttons.

The mag switches are 3-position, the upper "test" position has spring return to the "on" position, and to engage the "off" you have to pull the toggle while rocking it downward.

The round, silver button on the lower left is a momentary push button for engine start.

Stein built my panel, they'll be able to hook you up with whatever you need.

Here's a better picture:

The throttle mount is from Stein, it's milled from a chunk of aluminum.

I have one that looks like that from Stein and it is bent and welded to that shape. It is older and possibly made differently.

Throttle Brackets

We used to cut/bend/weld/sand these, but have since changed to milling out of bar stock. Both 9? and 12? versions available!:)

Panel finished

Been finished for awhile, but these also have the wind screen and dash complete. Running around 7.5 - 8.0 amps

They are water slide, which I purchased from Aircraft Specialty. I ordered some dry transfer, but for some reason the PDF file I sent them would not print at 100% size and I did not have the original file used to make the PDF. I have a feeling the water slides are not going to hold up, but we'll see.

Starting an old project

This is my 1st picture post.
I hope I can get this all re-wired up soon.

That's what I built. Not finished yet. There are still some labels missing, some are temporary. It's a lot of fun to play with.

All very nice work. I?m looking for a 9A. Just looking at pictures was wondering how one gets in behind a solid panel on a slider for upgrade or maintenance?

This isn't a great pic of it, but its the best I had to show. My 9 has 4 access panels built into the cowl section for access. All the fuses, battery, and avionics are under the 4 panels. Its this route, or hang upsidown under the dash to get stuff done. This is a much better option!!

That?s a beauty Pete! Would a long one piece cut-out work as well or getting into structure there?

Mounting a removable tablet in my 9A panel

I finally replaced my Lowrance with a Samsung tablet for ADSB In and Out using echoUAT, Avare, Garmin GTX 327, CMAX serial to Bluetooth, sniffing, wifi, Dynon 100, 180 & AP74.

I preferred a method which enabled me to remove the tablet after each flight for charging and update. Here's a pic.

https://thumbsnap.com/4zmaazK0

Second, I prepared a WORD narrative during the gradual installation of ADSB. I am not an EE so lots of the jargon was foreign to me. As each step was accomplished, and as my understanding of the components improved, I constantly rewrote the narrative. Anyone with the same equipment who would like a copy of my narrative, PM me and I will send it out.

Thinking of access panels on a RV-14 build for better access as I could have extra modules if I decide to go with EFII/EI. Curious if you cut these yourself and used doublers or you had it done? Realizing the top deck area is structural so I am trying get as much info as possible before considering.
Thanks,
Jim

Unfortunately I am no help when it comes to the build as I bought my bird this way. The builder did an amazing job thinking about the access to everything as he built it though. He checks the forums every once in awhile. Maybe he will chime in.

This is not a problem. All components, backup batteries, EMS modules are mounted directly behind the instrument panel on the sub panel F-7105. If I remove one or both displays, I have good access to the system. I don't have to lie down on my back. Unfortunately I didn't find another picture so quickly.

Panel in place

Well I got the panel aligned and all of the fasteners adjusted so it fits pretty well. Now to mount all of the goodies on the sub panel and run the wires. I have the Advanced quick panel so all my harnesses are complete. Second pic is with the canopy closed but looks kind of messy with all the protective paper on the canopy.

Looks great, Rico! All the time invested in redoing it was completely worth it, swear words and all.

Time to enjoy it, now that the heat of summer is subsiding.

RV-9A Panel

Thanks to Aerotronics for building this panel for me. I did a 3D CAD assembly model in Solidworks, sent them the files and they did the rest. I'm still wrestling with the wiring and cabling through the carrythrough spar and in the fuselage tunnel, so the panel is not yet mounted in the airplane. Thanks also to all those builders whose ideas for my panel I borrowed from theirs.

Ideas from skulking around here. Configured using high tech cut and paste on a cardboard project panel. 5” drawer pulls for handles to steady your finger pushes in the bumps. IFR with the IFD 440.

Advanced panel completed....

Just finished up my Advanced Flight Systems panel in my -9A. Couldn't be more pleased, AFS tech support and their ACM made wiring a breeze. Repurposed the old manual elevator trim cable mount for an ipad mount.
